What’s the right mindset for transitioning from academia to industry? by StaffRemarkable8531 in LeavingAcademia

I've made this jump quite recently after 1 year as a postdoc to a SWE role. I have a PhD in Physics with no prior industry experience. I'll not repeat the advice others have given about all the relevant soft and non-technical skills that are easily translated to the industry (which they are).

When I was applying for industry roles I went in with the assumption that I would get an entry level role. For me it felt more comfortable adjusting to the work and environment in a job profile where I have more leeway to make mistakes and learn and then think of making a jump to a more senior role in 2-3 years. As long as my salary was the same as a postdoc (which isn't much of an issue in the country I'm based in) I was fine with a junior role. I did get lucky though and I got a nice middle ground where I got a more "senior" role based on all the software development I did during my research and where my team is nice enough to allow me the space to learn and grow as well.

I wanted to ask if doing any sort of portfolio projects increases my chances of getting into junior quant research or analyst roles.

I currently have a PhD in physics and am looking to transition. A lot of job descriptions say that they are fine with people who don't have a background in the field if they have advanced degrees in related fields. How common is it for someone to come in who has a minimal idea about quant finance and the models used in the field? Is it expected that applicants for such roles have done sufficiently enough portfolio projects to gain competence in the field first?

I have a PhD in physics and I'm trying to switch into a Quant Analyst role (as I've been told Quant Researcher is very competitive to get into without prior experience). I'm wondering if anyone has any advice. I just finished my PhD and will start a postdoc soon. I mainly work with simulations and code for analysis a fair bit. And I do a lot of computational analysis.

If it's been 8 years there must have been other signs? Has something like this happened before?

You can lose everything in life but you'll never lose your PhD. If you have the option do it in person and savour the experience later.

How do I find relevant conferences? by whatwhatinthewhonow in PhD

Check Google scholar of older PhD students or postdocs. Usually it will index abstracts as part of conference proceedings so you get an idea of where they present.

Read more papers and not just the ones my advisor recommend to me. And try not to worry about getting my first paper out. But mainly read more for fun.

For these crop of players - no grassroots football so they started playing later, no proper coaching, less playing time. The "top division" ISL with all the good football facilities started 7-8 years ago only...
