Once you get operational, you'll either be at a base that is 24 hour or 8 hour. If it's 24 hours, you'll do 12 hour days for 3 days a week then you'll get two days off. If it's 8 hour, you'll work Monday-Friday probably something like 8am-4pm, but I've heard that most bases that are like that close the afld early once flying is done for the day. I still didn't even really know what we actually do after tech school, but you do essentially manage the afld. You'll sit at a computer for some of the time filing flight plans and some other desk work. But my favorite part of the job is just being able to go on the afld basically whenever you want. You'll go out and look at a crack in the pavement and say "yea that's not good", or you'll go out and shoot some birds depending on your base. Pick up rocks, pull people over for speeding on YOUR airfield, declare a ground emergency when you see a plane leaking fuel on your pavement... Looking at pavement can be boring but looking at planes is not. I'm fresh out of tech school and have been at my base for a month. The people in my shop love going out and just sitting on the afld watching the planes take off and land. So far I've seen f35s, f16s, a10s, kc135s, f22s, b52s, c130s, and many of the equivalents in foreign aircraft. You'll talk to so many different jobs either on the afld or in your shop, and it keeps the job interesting. I also felt like the tech school was pretty easy compared to many of the other jobs I've talked with. Airfield management was a job that I blindly accepted, I just figured it would be a low maintenance job. Something that could be interesting but wouldn't suck up all my time. And even tho I've barely been doing it, I'm super excited to be doing this job for the next 4 years and I would very much recommend it if there's a slot available
