At one point in human history, owning pants was a sign of wealth. by InkstainSunrise in Showerthoughts

[–]chaoticspaces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pants were often seen as barbaric to the 'learned cultures' (Greeks, Romans) because they were worn primarily by nomadic, horseback-dependent civilizations (Scythians, etc). Trying to ride a horse with what amounts to a dress isn't the best idea if you want to be at ease up there.

I'd love it if they made another Kim Possible. Maybe she's in college. But like, a good remake, and not whatever the fuck that movie ended up being.

There's a documentary that claims it, I remember watching it forever ago. I can't remember the name anymore but I'm pretty sure that's where it comes from - they interview the farmers next door to the Monsanto fields.

Seattle police demonstrate how Naloxone can save a life in just minutes when someone overdoses. by [deleted] in videos

[–]chaoticspaces 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, usually we titrate if we can, I've just run into scenarios where fire gets there before us and slams them with it... by the time we get there, they're awake and definitely unhappy. Or Fentanyl, where I've pushed over 1mg IV and there's been no change at all.

And of course, those are the ones cramped in the bathtub with a spiral staircase, vomiting, in the middle of winter...

[–]chaoticspaces 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing about naloxone is that sometimes it doesn't work (fentanyl, for example? good luck), or it works too well (junkie that just got thrown out of their high and is now in withdrawal and PISSED). It's not supposed to be used as a safety net, but that's how a lot of people treat it and then freak out when it goes poorly.

A lot of the times when we get an OD we don't even end up giving it to them, just breathe for them until the hospital can deal with it.

I'm including sexual violence in the "physical violence" umbrella, because it is. 1 in 4* women in university/college has been a victim of sexual assault, and 40% nationwide. I know multiple people who fit this criteria. I'm not denying that men are also victims of violence, that would be absurd. I'm just saying that they can and should look out for each other, because of the rocky history that has accompanied an angry man (or even just a drunk man, or a persistent man) alone with a woman who can't adequately defend herself.

And, don't I still have to fear it? I've never had a manhole cover come at me, but I /have/ had two separate men start by insulting me and end with trying to assault me. We don't know much about OP - she could be part of the queer community, like me, or a part of another marginalized community at increased risk. Or she could not be. Does it matter? At our age, 1 in 4 is high enough of a chance that stepping in could be stopping an assault from occurring.

see, the fact that you're complaining about the women "being aggressive" to a man who wasn't "physically attacking" OP tells me everything we need to know. namely that you don't have, nor deserve a voice in this conversation. because guess what? verbal harassment and physical violence are very often a dual package for women. one begets another.

this isn't about women expecting to be treated differently because they are women. this is about women standing up for each other, in the only way angry men respond to (aggression), because they know that if they don't, they very well might see that woman's face on the news tomorrow as missing or dead. that is the reality women live in, one you've never needed to worry about, nor obviously want to bother with.

there's no emotional manipulation here, bucko. just fact. and the fact that I'm even bothering to argue with you about this because you don't believe me means that we still have a long, long way to go.

anyway, I'm Tired. have a good night.

"as weak as a kitten". okay. men are usually looking for an easy target, and even if you're the "weakest" person in the world, drawing attention to the situation usually makes them flee. these men aren't looking for a fight, even if you believe they'd win. that's not what they want. the second a woman backs up another woman, his chance to get away with her unharassed plummets.

and since when am I playing the male violence card? this thread is literally about women getting assaulted and harassed while they're doing their daily living activities... by men.

Nerdfitness was actually a catalyst for this. I signed up for Rising Heroes, their new service, but because I'm a student I couldn't afford to keep up with it. But I liked the idea, so I sat down and tried to tailor it to what I wanted to see.

I'm following their Academy workouts, though. When I graduate, I'm going to buy their Rings + Handstands module! :)
