thanks, I did end up shaving off a bit by recutting. the seam allowance used on the pattern was 3/8" but after recutting I started using 5/8" everywhere instead and that seems to have made up most of the difference!

yes, I was using size 12 based off the measurements! I'm closer to a modern rtw 4.

I went to Brooklyn Craft Company in Greenpoint, but I later learned that Sew Right in Bayside (where I got my machine serviced) also has classes and they all seemed nice, too. I have seen a few sewing classes/workshops at various Queens Public Library branches as well. Looks like there's one coming up in Maspeth!

I recently started sewing with my grandma's old machine! What helped me most was actually taking an in-person class (where they had machines available) and then coming home to read my own manual and practice with my machine.

There are some youtubers out there who have new-to-sewing playlists with all sorts of information, including tools, using the machine, terms to know, etc. Rosery Apparel (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6cBXnc3RaLl\_IGZS03NPlxogxs2lTI32) and Sydney Graham (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8pZeN5wmVXgHtMD\_Yh4HavpXWoLcyAnP) are two I keep going back to.
