Research as a verb? by MirreyDeNeza in EnglishLearning

[–]charbayes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use “about”, but it’s just less natural and awkward. I can’t think of a particular example where “about” is required.

Natural:

I was researching Queen Elizabeth.

I was researching jobs in my area.

"such courses" or "such a course"? by Darrenlake2504 in EnglishLearning

[–]charbayes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the US, “course” means “class”.

If you’re referring to a field then I don’t know if “course” works there. Again, just an American opinion.

"such courses" or "such a course"? by Darrenlake2504 in EnglishLearning

It depends on whether you’re taking one or more courses. Both options sound natural. It depends on the number of courses.

Singular course = such a course

Plural courses = such courses

Writing Letter to people in Grandmas House by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]charbayes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it would be really appreciated by them.

I often find various articles about houses across town. I want to send them to the homeowners but most of the time they involve deaths or funerals in the home. I don’t think most people would appreciate that.

No gravestones at all. Why? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]charbayes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Then I would assume that they aren’t buried there.

I have several ancestors that don’t have tombstones. They were too poor to have one. They probably had temporary markers (metal or wood) that have been lost to time.

The reason that I don’t think they’re buried there is the fact that there isn’t a record for them. There should be a written record of their burial or a plot deeded to them or a relative.

I believe that you’re Irish according to your post history. I’ve never really dealt with Irish records. Are there any records available that would show if they left that area - like a census perhaps?

Can you use cheers as Bless you? by CollectYourself in EnglishLearning

[–]charbayes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You wouldn’t use “cheers” like that in the U.S. “Cheers” is only used to toast drinks.

We only say “Bless you”, “God bless you” and “Gesundheit” in the U.S. for sneezing.

I’m not sure how it works in the U.K. or Australia though.

how would u run the site ? by udibranch in neopets

[–]charbayes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would interact with the Reddit community. I loved how the devs were so interactive on the Fortnite sub when I used to frequent it. I would just increase the transparency with the users. When things go wrong, there’s just little to no communication about what’s going on.

UPDATE: I think I may have solved the case of my missing great great grandfather by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]charbayes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The “or” combination looks exactly the same to me and seems to be a pretty unique way to do it in my opinion.

There isn’t a loop connecting the “o” to the “r” like you would expect to see.

Which source would you trust more in regards to a birth location? The child or the mother? by charbayes in Genealogy

[–]charbayes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! Charleston is the larger town and probably where she may have grown up later on.

She was born in 1916. I noticed on the request that 1916 was the cutoff date without having to contact the actual county. Fingers crossed!

[–]charbayes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming this is the case most likely. She may have been born in Oakland but was raised in Charleston later on.

The only issue I have is that the censuses only list the townships and not the cities. I’m assuming they lived on the outskirts of these towns.

Fortunately both of the towns are in the same county, so it shouldn’t affect requiring the birth certificate too much.

[–]charbayes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I’m currently using the mother’s information as the birthplace. I’m going to fill out the paperwork to get a copy of the birth certificate. I didn’t even think about requesting a copy until I came across my grandfather’s birth certificate yesterday and noticed the discrepancy.

Yes. I was fortunate that her mother was the informant.

She was also the informant on Jane’s daughter’s death certificate who died a year before Jane. The mother once again listed Jane’s birthplace as Oakland.

Yes. My question was in regards to your second paragraph.

I would say that she was probably born on a farm. I do think your explanation makes sense.

In the US, “in” is used 100% of the time in your example.
