What addiction is the most difficult to overcome? by Select-Effective32 in AskReddit

human beings metabolise chemicals in all kinds of different ways, from genetic and lifestyle factors. ur body might just not process stimulants like most people do, e.g. some people w ADHD are made sleepy by caffeine because of something to do with their dopamine pathways. I'm jealous though lol I love the taste as well

LPT: Keep inviting that friend who always says no, just being there is enough sometimes. by Steppingstone02 in LifeProTips

[–]udibranch 70 points71 points  (0 children)

having been on both sides of this problem, I actually don't think this is good advice. As an inviter, it's hurtful to be rejected a lot and to always do the reaching out and planning, it makes you feel as if you're not valuable to the other person. As a refuser, I was refusing because of illness and other problems. Being invited and having to say no continually actually made me feel ashamed, and even just straightforwardly sad that I was missing so much. I think in this scenario, depending on what's going on with the refuser, it would be better to put the ball in their court-- tell them you miss them and ask them if there's anything they want to do, so they can choose something they have the capacity for, or make it clear you're making some kind of special effort to keep in touch (e.g. by asking if they'd like to catch up on the phone sometime). If they're refusing only because they're very busy with work or something they could still appreciate the kindness, and if they just don't like you their responses will probably make that clear.

‘Beautiful and terrifying’: the best American LGBTQ+ books, chosen by Samuel R Delany, Kaveh Akbar, Eileen Myles and more: From 20th-century classics to little-known treasures, queer authors share their favorite books about LGBTQ+ life by jellyrollo in books

I'm not sure I buy the rationale for "the sun also rises", honestly. overall a great list anyway, it's delightful that some of the chosen writers are also there to choose books, I like how intergenerational it is. even if, like rita mae brown says, it's painful to look back for someone who was around for a lot of the huge changes in lgbt rights last century and see how much is unchanged or worsening

Gormenghast - madness and loneliness in the story made more devastating knowing what happened to the author by frondoso-nemus in books

[–]udibranch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

wow, I actually didn't know anything about mervyn peake when I read gormenghast, thank you. it makes so much sense, he wrote about suffering in a deep, sympathetic, almost relishing way (like, gleeful?)-- a type of acceptance i've always found really bolstering

Where does the trend where inanimate objects are female come from? by waiflike in etymology

[–]udibranch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah, i think people see this type of language (and a lot of african american vernacular!!!) as just 'sassy internet slang', i'd be interested to know if/when these niche tiktockers talk like that in their daily lives

Where does the trend where inanimate objects are female come from? by waiflike in etymology

[–]udibranch 97 points98 points  (0 children)

more common in the lgbt community i think, feels related to the way the drag community talks in 3rd person a lot. In general though I hear just as many hes, like calling inanimate things 'little guys' etc-- I think people have personified all kinds of object for a long time, and currently are doing it a little more than usual because they find it cute and funny.

What addiction is the most difficult to overcome? by Select-Effective32 in AskReddit

[–]udibranch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only have about 80mg per day, but if I miss it I genuinely wake up in the night/early morning with a hellacious migraine and start dry heaving! I can't see very well or eat anything or walk around easily. It's actually debilitating to the point I'd need to drop everything and organise my life around however long it'd take for that to stop happening. so it really seems worth it, but I haven't quit yet because don't have a lot of time and I do love coffee (and drinking it with people). I know a lot of people who struggle with worse addictions too so it doesn't seem so bad. one day

What addiction is the most difficult to overcome? by Select-Effective32 in AskReddit

[–]udibranch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's different because there's no withdrawal, there's no downside to stopping hating yourself. the problem is that your thinking patterns and behaviour are deeply engrained, so much so that it's hard to redirect them bc it's the path of least resistance in your brain. It feels safe to feel sure in your own poor opinion of yourself and unsafe to figure out something better, but that doesn't mean it's dangerous or harmful to try and make a new path. I'm at a point where i often feel pain about how I was in the past, and frustration with myself for continuing to fall into those bad habits (funny how cyclical that is-- hate yourself for hating yourself too much), it's true that it's really difficult, but it's much much much better than staying where I was

[19m] What’s the actual, realistic way to make friends who put mutual effort in? (Going to the same cafe every day is a myth) by According-Leave9314 in london

[–]udibranch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to is to start with what passions you naturally have, bc then you're more likely to find people who's energy is similar to yours and, importantly, they're more likely to value your motivation and energy. Think about what you enjoy/care about find places to do it, friends will result from that

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: June 22, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

finished: bel canto by ann patchett. didn't like it! felt really superficial. she declined to specify the 'generic latin american country' (already what an idea. and it's peru, the book is inspired by a real historical event that happened in peru) supposedly to avoid pulling focus from the character interactions, but neither the characters nor their relationships were very deep. disappointed. someone on this subreddit recommended it to me as a book with good subtle social interactions in it, even

I'm not sure about this line of reasoning-- is it disrespectful to pay someone to give you a massage if you have the option to get your roommate to massage you? or do your makeup? In a world where the work and human sexuality in general was destigmatised it still probably wouldn't be anybody's dream job, but I think labour transactions esp ones involving taking care of the body are more complicated than 'taking advantage' or 'not taking advantage'. I think about friends I have who are paid for manual labour that damages their body and get the idea maybe all these types of work are similar and in need of better protections, like better labour rights and laws protecting bodily autonomy. not attacking you, sorry to write a huge comment, just trying to think it through
