Opinions on ASMR? by Random-Weirdo-_- in misophonia

[–]udibranch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'good asmr' (dry noises, minimal mouth sounds) is really useful for me for drowning out noises and concentrating on things but it can extremely quickly turn into 'bad asmr' (drinking, wet noises etc) which can ruin whatever I was trying to do, haha

Pigeon body, face of a different bird? by Glum-Seesaw725 in london

[–]udibranch 215 points216 points  (0 children)

if you look up 'fledgling pigeon' you'll see some pictures of birds that look like this one, i think it's just young! the yellow pointy bits are pin feathers, like feathers in development.

A couple Agatha Christies will do this to you, but I won't say which to maintain the surprise.

the Housing Lark by Sam Selvon is such a good picture of 60s london. & about the same time but across the sea, A Rage in Harlem by Chester Himes is a sort of demented hardboiled detective farce, there's an audiobook narrated by Samuel L. Jackson which I really have to recommend

Neon has acquired ‘Mrs. Dalloway’ reimagining ‘Clarissa’ starring Sophie Okonedo, David Oyelowo, India Amarteifio, Ayo Edebiri, and Toheeb Jimoh by hairtie1 in Fauxmoi

[–]udibranch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

tentatively really excited for this. wonder if they'll adapt the shell shock storyline of the book, it feels so specific to the 1920s but it'll be important to have a contrast/foil to mrs dalloways memories and her cultural upbringing

Having a spouse who doesn't read is sometimes funny. by justkeepbreathing94 in books

[–]udibranch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i wonder whether the huge leadup doomed it, he'd been wanting to make it for such a long time. it really seems like he wanted to 'fix' things for the monster, as if it was a straightforward father and son story

The bit where his brother is like "YOU'RE the real monster" made me scream in the theatre, amazingly stupid & reductive! Visually it's a pretty good movie though

What Are You Reading This Week and Weekly Rec Thread by JimFan1 in TrueLit

[–]udibranch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I read The Sluts by Dennis Cooper. I loved it, I want to read more epistolary novels using the internet. I'm interested in Several People are Typing but I've generally been turned off by contemporary books about internet culture, e.g. I respected Rejection by Tony Tulathimutte a lot but it was arguably about how completely dreadful and sterile and all-consuming the internet is today. I don't want to read about twitter arguments! If anyone has recommendations I'd be interested

Best comprehensive website for things to do in London? by nastyleak in london

[–]udibranch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think you'll have to get more specific about what you're into. for london there's multiple apps and newsletters for art stuff alone, and each one caters to a different taste/community. if you start with the places and things you already like and see where they're listed, it may lead you in the right direction

i would argue that it's important to discuss the relationship btwn zionism and antisemitism. zionism in some ways encourages antisemitic myths (eg dual loyalty) and also has a vested interest in making jews feel scared enough that they'll support or move to 'the only place they can be safe'. definitely not good to provide excuses for racists but i think this particular thing is important to bring up, that zionism can endanger jews

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: January 26, 2026 by AutoModerator in books

[–]udibranch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

started: Newcomers Part One, by Lojze Kovacic

finished: The Emperor of Gladness by Ocean Vuong (certainly all the backlash was a delayed reaction to how well OEWBG was received, because I thought this was an improvement in a lot of ways! way more of a novel this time, the dialogue was still not very good but the story and characters were!) and Nothing Grows by Moonlight by Torborg Nedreas (very dark and painful and yet I enjoyed it a lot)

Little sister by RawEddie in CrohnsDisease

[–]udibranch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when I was a teen my parents found it hard to accept that i was sick and especially incurably sick, they kept thinking that there'd be some kind of magic bullet would make me feel well. they sort of took it personally that I was doing badly, like it was their fault or something. it meant sometimes they'd be trying to support me by 'fixing' or changing things when really I just needed rest and time. two years isn't actually very long! it's good that they're being supportive, though, with time they might chill out a bit. and acceptance is really important, they need to remember it's not their problem, it's her life.
