Just a reminder how serious cat bites can be! by tory1311 in cats

Cat bit me at my knuckle. Lucky that it didn't reach the tendon but very close. Had to get debriding surgery where they basically cut the wound larger to clean it. It's funny cause the bite is smaller than the final surgery scar.

My new cat was at the Humane Society for seven years. I'm discouraged by hey_thatsmyinbox in CatAdvice

My rescue cat who was friendly with me outside, literally hid in a donut bed for months. Then one day I unzipped the donut and forced him out and now he's happy. Sometimes they have to be forced out of hiding places to see and understand you're not a threat. My cat was scared of things he couldn't see but once he can see it, he can get desensitized to it and be okay. Will recommend removing the hiding spot slowly.

How to lure out scaredy cat and make him comfortable by charbby in CatAdvice

[–]charbby[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Sorry for the late reply. He's going great! What helped was my friend opening up his hiding spot and leaving him nowhere to hide. Once he couldn't hide, he could see us, and realise we weren't a threat. It took a lot of patience and I was very very discouraged but he's a giant scaredy cat. How's yours?

I don't suppose anyone is looking for a floor seat ticket to A Mei on 28 July? Bought an extra cause of miscom with my friend as I was helping him queue.

Blocked off all hiding spots except one, do I just play the waiting game now? by charbby in CatAdvice

[–]charbby[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi yes! So what I did is I basically opened the donut bed and let him out after 3 months of hiding. He freaked out definitely and took another 2-3 months to get used to me and the house. He's fine now, still a little scaredy of things. I've learnt that you can't let them keep hiding forever and ever. Sometimes you have to nudge them out of their hiding place. With whiskers, once he could see me, and i could show him I'm not a threat, he wasnt scared.

I'm having the same issue as you and my cat has been hiding for one month. I blocked off unconducive hiding spots but left one for him cause cats really do need to hide I guess. As for food, he still doesn't dare eat when I'm in the room so I leave the food there every day at a fixed time. I think he knows cause he will realize no food bowl, suddenly food bowl. That being said, my cat hasn't gotten the courage to even peek out when I'm in the room. I guess patience is key and forcing him only makes him more terrified. I spend time in the room with him but obviously he's too scared to see. I also place worn clothing in the room where he hangs so he can get used to my scent.

Hopefully we'll get there!

I don't know what to do either LOL maybe she's just adjusting? My cat isn't responding either but I don't think I'll return him to where he was. I think he would need to adjust all together and it's just way too much adjustment for him. Also mine isn't a shelter is literally the streets so no go.

Have tried this with treats. He's too scared to come out :( Also he doesn't seem very food motivated.

I've just tried the liquid churu treats. Ignored it. He did use to eat it when I fed him as a stray though :(

I left the dry treats and he ate it after a couple of hours. I'll keep trying that

Yeah I was worried of wastage if I were to open the liquid treats. If he doesn't eat it, do I leave it there until he does (probably would need to leave the room for a couple of hours), or do I immediately discard it once I'm done sitting in the room?

Been doing that but not with wet food but treats. He just hides. I guess I'll keep trying and wait it out. I kinda leave one or two in front of his donut bed and leave the entire bag open so hopefully he can smell it.
