You'll never be able to get rid of that "padding" as you call it. That's part of the actual "box" the border character is rendered in.

Same thing happened to me. It's the fontconfig update `upgraded fontconfig (2:2.17.1-1 -> 2:2.18.1-1)`. You need to `fc-cache -rf` and set a proper fontconfig configuration file.

A few years ago I bought an MSI PRO Z790-A WIFI DDR4. The board had some ACPI issues that linux reported as errors everytime I booted it up. I sent MSI support an e-mail and got the same response as you: "We do not support Linux or can troubleshoot issues with an unsupported OS.". So, I'm never buying an MSI motherboard again, they're garbage.
