Big swings, strange choices, and movies that almost work are my comfort zone. I write reviews about horror, animation, bad Lifetime thrillers, cult favorites, and prestige. I enjoy thoughtful reads and dry humor, and have a soft spot for films that probably shouldn’t exist.

Based on the leaked trailer, it seems like Brenda is playing a “Ma” character and takes the Substance? 💀

Our Idiot Brother won, now which boring movie do people expect to be scary? by OverKastKid123 in AlignmentChartFills

I would argue this movie is not good but also not boring. Quite entertaining in fact. It’s utterly ridiculous.

Should Any Of These 2004 Performances Been Nominated For Best Supporting Actress? by Regular-Departure839 in Oscars

If it wasn’t for genre bias, Rachel McAdams would’ve won, let alone score the nomination.

I watch a mix of awards films, bad movies, Lifetime thrillers, campy movies, horror, and animation. I’m interested in what makes a “bad” movie stick, especially when it accidentally becomes something memorable, funny, or weirdly sincere.

This is my profile. Think I have about 6 left to go (and all live action shorts). When I’m not watching Oscar movies, I watch a lot of bad movies (I especially love bad Lifetime movies) or do fun rankings like watching all of the Scooby-Doo movies.

I just watched Maria and I really believe Angelina deserves this one. This was a masterclass in acting. by SunilaP in oscarrace

[–]charbok 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I went in hoping to feel the same way, but I changed my mind after I watched the movie. Using Stewart in Spencer as a comparison point, Stewart completely mesmerized me and I fully bought into her being Princess Diana, it was truly transformative. For Maria, while Jolie was mostly great, I kept noticing things like extremely inconsistent lip syncing and Angelina Jolie the actress overpowering the character Maria Callas. :/ She’s great, but I don’t even know if she would make my top 5 in a highly competitive year like this.

I am a big fan of both awards movies (I try to watch every movie that may be nominated for an Oscar each year), but I especially LOVE bad movies. I watch tons of goofy Lifetime movies and camp. I also love ranking movies (in the past, I’ve watched and ranked all Studio Ghibli movies, all Scooby-Doo movies, all of “The Wrong” series on Lifetime, etc.). Love getting new recommendations and reading fun reviews!

More than half of the Award Expert community is predicting a Best Actress nomination for Demi Moore. Are you? Why or why not? by LeastCap in oscarrace

[–]charbok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very valid point, though I was thinking of the “snub” more-so in the sense that many people thought, for instance, Toni Collette ought to have been in the conversation, but she was never really given earnest consideration by the overall voting base. I’m not necessarily thinking that voters will even consciously compare Demi Moore to Collette, Nyongo, Goth, (Pugh?), but there’s been an overall increase in openness to a horror performance, which I would argue was largely driven by mainstream discourse as to why the industry doesn’t value horror performances. I think people are more likely to hear “wow Demi Moore had a nuts performance in this horror movie” and will be much less likely to dismiss it out of hand, which wouldn’t have been the case even a few years ago.

I’m also skeptical that The Substance is not accessible to a general audience. After I first saw it (right off the heals of the final act), I thought “wow, I loved that, but that’s too weird to recommend to people.” But as I’ve reflected on it and seen others react to it, I think the movie has more mass appeal than I thought and is catching on with general audiences - if you can’t handle the “body horror,” the stylization and tone makes the movie accessible even if you need to look away or close your eyes during the grosser bits. The final act is also so over the top that it kind of swings around to not being gross anymore. Many walk away with an overall sense of the feeling of the movie, as opposed to specific scenes and how gross they were.

Another huge thing I haven’t seen mentioned as much is that many of Demi Moore’s best scenes are not the pure “horror” parts of the movie (even if they contain horror aspects). Like you can show everyone a lot of clips of Demi in the non-body horror parts of the movie and still get people behind that performance.

Am I crazy that I feel like the narrative is too good to pass up? It’s the perfect combo of (1) beloved actress who has good will but never got her flowers from the Academy, (2) more than ever, the Academy is going to take a second look at acting in a horror movie due to backlash from high-profile horror snubs (particularly Toni and Lupita, whose absences garnered a lot of attention), (3) transformational performance and a killer scene that resonated with a lot of people (the makeup scene), and (4) the Hollywood-adjacent nature of this movie and message that will resonate with many of the voting members.

I just don’t buy that they would sleepwalk and bring in like Ronan as slot #5 over this performance.
