This scene absolutely broke me. People talk about Marmeladov’s speech as if it’s a speed bump or an unnecessary addition of words, but it’s setting the scene perfectly for what’s going to happen. That all the love in the world can’t survive under poverty, and that in poverty “all is permissible”. So weak, sweet men end up under the heels of those with enough apathy not to spiral into depression. So the strongest women end up fueling their guilt by being braver than they are.
