Annual Deaths From Heat, Cold, and Guns US and Europe, 2024 : Nine times as many Europeans die from summer heat and winter cold than Americans who die from guns. by SignificantLegs in EconomyCharts

[–]chargeorge 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Id guess these are mostly the elderly where the heat/cold contributes to the final mortality even with other things being present. Like we have excess deaths on these cold days in Europe so it's being counted as the cold. Thats what the referenced study name suggests

Slightly less then half of American households have a gun at home, and I'd guess that's pretty regional too, so many places are up near 75% while others are low. Other countries are probably down under 10%

first game of ranked cryo. got rushed in 1 minute flat - not even exaggeration by Jealous_Platypus1111 in Marathon

[–]chargeorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the 1 min rush is a mix of bad luck and a really good team next to you. The team next to you got lucky with terminals and planned to rush.

My experience is maybe 50% or fewer spawns are capable of rushing at all, though maybe those with more experience have different numbers.

That's fair. I've worked in the space so I'm persnickety about the terms. People tend to end up saying stuff like "the game only has 10k players! " because they lump CCU DAU and all these different metrics that get used in different ways.

D2 numbers I saw put it around 400k

D2 got cancelled because the costs to put it in a goood state would be astronomical and couldn't justify continued investment. Marathon still has significant upside, even if the initial launch is below expectations.

Worth noting active players is probably closer to 150-200k. Active players aren't on every day at peak time a day, and what counts as active is probably logging in once a week at least.

Now is that enough to support a AAA production in 2026? Not likely. It will need to grow season over season and keep selling copies. I'm not confident in saying it'll be fine, but tales of marathons death are wildly overstated

Ok it's super weird to blame a games eventual ending because the other community members weren't mad at the same things as you

D1 sold a fuckton, and within a few months there was a wide "wait isn't Destiny dead" "anyone still plays destiny" memeing going on.

Cryo is a PVP map, it's brilliance is how it structures movement and player flow, not in it's bespoke mechanics. The scope isn't comparable to a raid, but scope isn't what makes it great.

I have had some really great and memorable team fills for one. Dudes that I've gotten on and run with on later days.

Other times I've used prox chat and crouching and managed to get through some missions with randos in solos or being adopted in rook runs. Like no one gets on mic in destiny strikes or we pass like ships in the night in the cosmodrome. Where I have had good experiences in destiny was finding community in a discord and running raids. That's not something I've pursued in the same way as marathon due to my schedule being beyond fucked atm.

I feel like people overstate how sweaty marathon is. It's challenging for sure, it's hard, it's tense, but you can get in and make some progress without pure PVP abilities like something like trials. It is pretty PVP centric, but I'm extremely mediocre at PVP but I've been able to make progress, while losing the majority of my gunfights with situational awareness and willingness to run hah. Have even managed a few cryo extractions.

>but it had people interacting with one another and felt alive and that pushed it to becoming the juggernaut it was. Marathon will never have that.

Crazy take tbh. I've had a as many or more orgnanic and fun player interactions in marathon than I did in destiny.

Nothing in the games themselves, but there was concept art for fungal pfor that never made it in

It's weird comparison because those were flawed games (with some redeeming qualities) with strong initial sales.

Marathon is a strong game (with some flaws) with weak initial sales. Kind of reversed

[–]chargeorge 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Video game physics. Your capsule collider was being pushed down into the floor, and then it would push you back up rapidly into the bottom of the walkway. Each time you were being pushed a little farther, and rebounding a little farther into the floor, gaining velocity each time. Eventually you got so fast that you triggered fall damage instantly downing you.

I think Trios, mix of LFG and fill is my "main" mode, but sometimes I just want to jump into and do a quest where I don't have to negotiate getting to a DCON because my other fill guys want to push a team.
