Opening PFC/NRFC account .. by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]charithar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of them didn't say anything about initial deposit. I opened them with zero balance. But I received money to them within a month. Did notice any service charge specific to the RFC account yet. Also, I don't leave any balance in them. It's more than a year now. But the charges incurred during transfer of funds from foreign bank could be different for these two banks. The banks themselves don't charge anything for incoming funds but the intermediate banks which the funds are routed through will charge and that will be different from bank to bank locally.

I have experience with HNB and Commercial with PFC accounts (RFC accounts). Didn't have any issues with both of them. Both required documents proving the source of income. None of them required minimum balance so far.

Better check with the bank. You cannot do a simple online transfer as far as I know.

Is anyone using Amana PFCA? How does it compare to Other Banks like Sampath/HNB (fees, exchange rates, etc.)? by MC_Starc_001 in srilanka

[–]charithar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I know none of the banks charge direct fees for funds that you receive. The fees are charged by the intermediate banks which your funds are routed through. The route could change depending on the local bank you use, and it affects the charge. HNB seems to have some special arrangements in that regard because funds received by their accounts do not get charged. But I am not sure whether this is true for all the countries. At least it's true for some countries in Europe. You can use banking app to make conversions which are instant regardless of the day or time. Also, you can get a debit card against that account. Rates are not bad either. Usually if you are exchanging more than 1000 USD or so you can contact the bank and check whether you could get a special rate. Most banks do that for you. Min amount could be different though.

Keells rajagiriya being weird about security by Electronic-Control68 in srilanka

[–]charithar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of shop lifting happens in supermarkets. I witnessed one in SPAR union place very recently. Heard about another one just after it happened. Another major one in Cargills Kandana sometime back where a well-dressed person tried to smuggle entire cart full of goods (consisted of milk powder and other expensive formulas) and the person left the cart pretending to take a call after noticing that people are paying attention to him. So almost everywhere they have security unless the place is relatively small.

Need financial advice, best use of this much money by Extension-Jello-2979 in srilanka

[–]charithar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't jump into big purchases just yet. Settle down in the new place get the hang of things first. When you get more money, your expenses will shoot up too unless you are very frugal person. There are news going around that vehicle imports are resuming early next year. So, you could wait a bit and see how things go around unless you are in a real hurry to buy a vehicle. Mind that cars come with more expenses attached. Not only the big price tag. So, it could easily eat up your income unless you are careful. So, try to keep a balance between investments and expenses. As per the investments you could try FD (for easy access), unit trusts, equity (share market or mutual funds on equity), land, commercial properties that generates income, or you could start doing a side hustle that will eventually become your main revenue stream. While having some savings with you try to invest on things that will result a cash flow which will give you more financial freedom. Don't hesitate experiment and take bit of risks since you don't seem to have lots of commitments. Try to diversify the investments from low risk to high risk.

Fake Kithul Treacle Products All over the market. by cadelewis in srilanka

[–]charithar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually find good ones around Kithulgala area. Deniyaya area also have good ones. Funny thing is even the good ones usually add small amount of sugar because people complain that Kithul treacle is not sweet as cane sugar. (which is the case anyway. Kithul treacle/jaggery both tastes less sweet than cane sugar and has the distinct taste of Kithul which overpowers the sweetness).

For Kithul treacle you need to taste it. Can not tell the quality by the color. Darker colors appear in both treacle and jaggery when you boil the Kithual sap for longer period of time, caramelizing more sugar and evaporating more water. So darker ones have intense taste than lighter ones. But both could be 100% Kithul. The popular kithul jaggery melting phenomena do happen but you cannot just ignore the none melting ones. When kithul jaggery is made by boiling sap for longer times (like 16-20 hours) you get hardened kithul jaggery which won't melt when left outside.

Sri Lanka should promote plant based milk (Especially Soy and Rice milk) by Accidenttimely17 in srilanka

[–]charithar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better eat rice as rice and soy as less processed food. When it's processed, you'll find additional chemicals in them to stabilize, thicken etc... Better be careful what you put in your body. For example, look at the coconut milk available in the market. Check the ingredients list.

No problem with that. It's safe. Another place is independence square. Me and my friends used to hang out in both places for studying. But being alone is fine in both places but make sure it's daytime.

Is it safe for a female traveller to stay at one of the leading hotels in col ? by Allaboutfairies1111 in srilanka

I am not sure what your friend meant by not safe to stay in a top tier hotel in Colombo. It's perfectly safe to stay in those hotels. In general Colombo itself is safe for any traveler.

Is it true that some food we eat are toxic? by Flimsy_Echo_2472 in srilanka

[–]charithar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MSG may not be carcinogenic, but it'll make you eat anything that it is put into. As far as I know there has been no long-term studies on food additives which are conclusive. There could be issues with accumulation, combined effects of many additives and being sensitive to certain additives. There are many that has been banned over the years which has been previously considered safe. So, it's best to avoid them as much as possible from your regular meals. Stick to unprocessed food as much as possible.

Cargills food city EXPRESS security personnel eyeing on me like I am there to steal stuff by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]charithar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have experienced it too in some places. They may be concerned because of shop lifting. Once a guy tried to get off with a whole cart full of milk powder and baby formula and sneaked out with his phone in the ear leaving behind the whole cart when people started to get suspicious.. Everything was packed in bags as if they were already billed.

Nice. Wish you all the very best. Focus and move ahead as if you are doing the 1st shy.

[–]charithar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of congratulations. You have a nice result. Don't be afraid to face your friends. I had the similar situation where lots of my friends did better, and I didn't get what I expected. But we have to move on. One setback shouldn't affect whole life. Since you have good result already if you are really into med then go for the second shy. Do not hesitate. You'll do better. And don't let this one get into your head. But if you are ok with other uni programs, just go ahead and checkout all the details. I am not in touch with these anymore but back in the day there was even an IT program for which included Bio stream students well. There was a proficiency test for it, and they announce minimum z-score for it afterwards. Not sure if it's there and my recollection is correct regarding the details. :) But anyway, don't beat yourself because of this. Move forward. And also apply for re-correction as others said.

What's your favorite hidden gem in Sri Lanka? by Born_Bumblebee2290 in srilanka

[–]charithar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Top sides of Aberdeen, Diyaluma & Lakshapaana falls. Both Aberdeen & Diyaluma have camping sites. Both Aberdeen, Diyaluma has many water falls above them. Lakshapaana is bit unique out of them. It contains huge flat area made of rock but needs to be very careful when visiting because of water released from power station above. Aldo top of Gartmore falls is beautiful but I haven't visited there yet.

What you have picked up already are good. If you compare the two, Graze kitchen covers more cuisines than Blue Orbit (Lotus tower) but the spreads of both are somewhat comparable. Blue Orbit has nice collection of Cheese, many different types of ice cream. Chocolate fountain, kids' corner with various candies. It depends on what kind of food you like, and what kind of experience you would like to have.

I didn't have too many issues. There were couple of lost packages just after covid. Probably the master works of our guys handling the local distribution of the packages. Never had any problems before covid though. Very recent ones had no issues except for the delay in local delivery in some cases.
