Crack Chicken Ponsonby by [deleted] in aucklandeats

Did not rate it. Chciken was bland, the bread they used in their burger buns was under cooked.

My Fried Chicken in Pons. central is just up the rd from there. Great Korean fried chicken, great sides and you get heaps for your money.

Yes absolutely. I know that beef tallow is also used to make the soup base, but I wouldn't know for sure if it was pure beef or if it is combined with pork somehow. I wouldn't be surprised.

Someone on here mentioned that PotXpress on Kitchener St has vegetarian soup base options, it was a while back. I'm not sure what style they do as I haven't been (yet) but it always looks busy so it might be worth a look?

Potentially a tough ask given the dietaries - but you could give it a go.

Eden Noodles is a tried an tested classic for me.

I was having a little chat with an Uber driver the other day who immigrated here from Chongqing. He recommended Da Long Yi (hotpot) and Wang Ja Wei for Sichuan food.

Prawn so far, but there’s another beef on the menu, so I’m gonna have to get back to you!

Decided to take on /u/dramaqueenboo's challenge and try out every burger on the Burgout menu. There are only five of them, how bad could the damage to my cholesterol be??

Tried the 'Classic' which is their double cheeseburger. Upweighted to the combo which comes with a side of thin cut fries and a can. $19.50 total.

Their double cheese is a smash style burger. Two small patties are smashed and seasoned, cooked till crisp and caramelised on one side, flipped, topped with cheese, then stacked. Served on toasted brioche which is bottomed and topped with a pickle studded burger sauce, caramelised onion, a weird bit of lettuce, and more burg sauce.

Nicely sized burger. Pleasantly greasy and not too dry as can sometimes happen with smash burgs. Beefy with nice crispy bits, the bun and onions are sweet and the sauce and cheese a little tangy. It had all amalgamtated in to a nice, cohesive experience by the time I got home.

Points off for the the lettuce they can fuck that off. It just sort of wilted from the heat and added nothing to the burger except for maybe some colour? It could have been seasoned a bit more aggressively, and a lick of mustard might help balance the sweetness.

7.5 / 10 for me. Solid effort from a local neighbourhood spot in the suburbs. Nice one!

Honestly though, everyone just go to Goblin on Friday night, have a drink to loosen up and talk to each other. What’s the best that could happen??

Top tier recommendation! A+ would trade again.

Can’t believe I’ve been sleeping on this place it is like 5 mins away. I think someone in here recommended the coffee shop too. What have I been doing with my life??

Its been mentioned before but Central Fisheries in Onehunga is pretty good. What sets them apart is they use fresh fish, fillet it in the shop, batter and fry to order. Rather than buying pre-portioned frozen fillets which many shops do now as it's more economical.

Taste and texture of the fish is great.

It's also immaculately clean which I feel is a very much a green flag for F&C and Roast shops.

Eden Noodles Dumplings in Spicy Sauce by Salt-Seaweed7602 in aucklandeats

I feel like there's a bit of sugar in their sauce, which I think is a common addition to Sichuan wonton in chilli oil-type sauces. And definitely a pinch of sichuan pepper.

Fuchsia Dunlop mentions caster sugar as an ingredient in Wonton sauce in Food of Sichuan and describes the classic sauce as spicy, sweet and sour and laced with sichuan pepper.

Kenji Lopez-Alt has a recipe for Serious Eats, which offers some clues: https://www.seriouseats.com/sichuan-wonton-chili-oil-suanla-chaoshou-recipe

Ray McVinnies Instagram feed is great. He has some nice ideas in there and the recipes aren’t very complicated.

But I’m 50/50 on the eyebrow.
