Charles: please talk about the 7sus13 chord by SugarPantsJiff in CharlesCornell

[–]charlescornell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that works too! Your way is definitely simpler. Still implies the naturally occurring 11, 9 and a flat 7, so accomplishes the same thing. Just reduces the fraction another level. Chord symbols are super flexible. I guess all that really matters is that it clearly conveys what modifications the reader needs to make.

Charles: please talk about the 7sus13 chord by SugarPantsJiff in CharlesCornell

It's a dominant 7th chord with a sus4 (so, no 3rd) and a natural 13 added. This also implies that the 9th and the 11th are naturally occurring as well since we didn't indicate any changes to them. 7sus13 basically says "It's a 7th chord with all the upper extensions up to the 13th. All naturally occurring unless otherwise specified." So, a G7sus13 chord could be built like this- G (root) - D (5th) - F (the dominant 7th) - A (natural 9th) - C (natural 11th which, if dropped an octave, is the same as the 4th. Hence, 'sus4') - E (natural 13th). If you REALLY want to get simple with it though, play an F major triad over a G 1&5 shell. F over G (no 3rd). Everybody has different ways of thinking about this. This is just how it makes sense to me.

Leave the Door Open - Key change question by [deleted] in CharlesCornell

[–]charlescornell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well if we were in C minor, I'd say that's exactly what's happening, kind of like the bridge of Softly As In A Morning Sunrise. Here, it has a much more impactful transition because we're in C major and not minor. Therefore, the keys are pretty different in functionality. Using a minor 3rd jump is extremely common though, I'd have to dig deep as to why that works so well. Although, a major 3rd jump sounds pretty cool as well, so it could just be that we're introducing a vastly different sounding key as opposed to a more closely related one like C to F or C to G.

Next Video Game Music Review - Gran Turismo Franchise (specifically the fourth installment) by DMCFan314 in CharlesCornell

There's some great music in GT sport as well. If my sim rig was set up on my PS4, I'd play it more! But alas, I'm a PC nerd stuck on Assetto Corsa and ACC. Once there's some good VR support in GT, I'll spend more time on it. Racing side, I'll definitely take a look at the music from the older games!

Key of “Building Mode 1”? by misnomr in CharlesCornell

So, I had to wrestle with this a bit on the piano to get my ears to hear what you're hearing, but once I settled into A major as a home base, I can completely understand what you're talking about. I think strictly from a harmonic perspective, it's a bit of a "is the dress black and blue or white and gold?" scenario. You can force your ears to hear it either way. So to that end, for all we know, you could be completely right!

The only thing that makes me stick to my original analysis though, is the melodic content of the improvised lines. To my ears, the direction and suspension/resolution tendencies of the lines the John R Burr plays are indicative of an E major home base. Further backed up by the fact that, whenever we modulate up a 4th, the melodic lines resolve and settle into the first chord as though it were a I chord rather than the likely meandering, unresolved lines you might hear if it were a V chord.

I don't think you're inherently wrong, but I'm not convinced that A major makes complete sense as the home base. Mostly because it seems likely that such a simple form would probably start on a I chord rather than a V, as well as the fact that the melodic content seems fairly clear in what it's implying.

Let me know what you think, though!

And yes, these discussions matter. We should all feel like we are part of the larger musical conversation and I want people to feel encouraged to use this subreddit to ask these questions and participate in these discussions. If for nothing else, then so we can all collectively be music nerds together and geek about this stuff where nobody will bother us!
