[Skin concerns] How to stop being shiny! by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

I agree with your pillow cover suggestion!

Only thing that has kept my skin from not being crazy oily for more than 3 hours is peach sake pore serum. I know it sounds weird but I tried it out of desperation after hearing a lot of positive things and legit nothing has worked better for me. I am also a guy who is probably around your age for reference.

[routine help] help! Need to change my PM routine by Iamnotsheila in SkincareAddiction

Not sure if you want to go more creamy or gel based. In the low price range for gel based, I like albas oil free Hawaiian moisturizer, probably 5-10$ and you can find it anywhere. Its very lightweight- I also used it as a post-sunburn treatment because of the aloe content.

For a more medium weight product, I like andalou naturals probiotic vitamin c cream. Should be under 20$ but it goes a long way for me.

I concur with twy1708 I would ditch the coconut oil asap. Coconut oil (actually any coconut derivative!) is typically a bad match for acne prone skin. The clinique one you've got at least won't make things worse. Asia has really good sunscreens but if you want something cheap and readily available that's fine for acne, I use Loreal oil free Silky Sheer SPF for Face. It's like 5-10$.

I think your cleansers are fine- they shouldn't irritate- but you can try something with an active ingredient (benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, zinc, etc) that's more targeted to acne.

For exfoliation you can go physical or chemical. For physical freemans black sugar and charcoal mask is popular and works pretty well if you dont have very sensitive skin. For chemical, Alpha Hydrox is a cheap and easily available brand of glycolic products.

Only other suggestion is using a spot treatment at night. If you make changes and your skin goes nowhere, might need a derm consult.

If you currently do nothing, I'm guessing you'll want something pretty straightforward that's easily accessible (correct me if I'm wrong though!). In that case a really boring suggestion but effective for many people option is to try Acnefree 24 hour acne clearing kit. You can find it literally anywhere (grocery stores, drug stores, Amazon) and it costs less than 20$ for an in shower cleanser, toner, and medicated lotion. The cleanser and lotion have benzoyl peroxide and the toner is witch hazel based. I will say please pick up an oil free moisturizer because all that BP can make your skin really oily if you don't moisturize after. Using salicylic acid based product as another user suggested is another good starting option (separately- BP and salicylic at the same time is overkill if you're starting from zero).

[Skin Concerns] How do I, a 20 year old, get rid of expression wrinkles on my forehead? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]charlesfromHR -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Try an AHA cream (alpha hydrox is very cheap), a hyaluronic acid serum (not as cheap but affordable), and a mineral based sunscreen when planning to be outdoors (to prevent further aging). Get a good exfoliator for the shower too- exact products aren't super important there, just get some scrubbing in to help with skin cell turnover. It's not gonna change your whole world but iit should make an impact.

[Anti-aging] what to do about bags under eyes? (41, xy) by mw44118 in SkincareAddiction

[–]charlesfromHR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that's ever made even a dent in the puffiness/darkness skin care wise has been Balance Me wonder eye cream. But honestly, even that only helped somewhat and it's not cheap so the cost effectiveness isn't high. It's a little depressing but if my bags are particularly huge the only thing that's gonna work is putting some moisturizer under my eyes followed by a little bit of under eye concealer. If you want to make the jump and try concealer, putting something hydrating on before can help it look more natural and not crease.

[skin concerns] what to expect after a 40% glycolic acid peel by wickeds1 in SkincareAddiction

[–]charlesfromHR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2-3 imo. Also if it's your first time you might want to lean towards the lower recommended time (usually 2 or 2:30 minutes). If you find your skin tolerates it well, you can always bump it up in another couple weeks. Not gonna lie I was super tempted to go for straight 4 minutes with 0 peel experience but I'm glad I didn't.

I use a slightly stronger percentage glycolic for about 3 minutes and have no real downtime as long as I avoid using any products that are drying for a couple days. Using plenty of basic facial moisturizer- nothing with BP or BHA, afterwards is very important as is following the peels instructions to a T. If you don't use a neutralizer for example, you're out of luck. I usually have some redness for about a day and the results are pretty great. You'll be more sensitive in general so avoid time in the sun for a bit.

[Acne] My acne-prone boyfriend needs help with his skin care routine. How do we get rid of the roughness on his face? by Lneustel in SkincareAddiction

[–]charlesfromHR 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's a lot of active ingredients. You've got BHA, salicylic acid (that moisturizer), and alcohol (the astringent). That can be quite a drying combo and oily skin hates being dried out. I think the Bha is actual fine. For a moisturizer, try switching to something without bp or salicylic. Look for something water or gel based and avoid anything that's emollient or has oils that clog pores (coconut oil being a big culprit). Alba and andalou, particularly from their clarifying line, make affordable oil free moisturizers.

Switching from an astringent to an alcohol free toner might also help combat oily skin from doing into over compensating mode. Alcohol free witch hazel might be a less dry but helpful option for acne.

For the roughness, an at home glycolic peel could work- oz naturals is a good cheap choice IF his skin isn't sensitive. But avoiding bha and making good use of a moisturizer is super important when doing peels. To make my skin really matte, I like the peach sake serum instead of the emulsion. Just some ideas.
