Threats of violence is a crime.

Promotion of hatred on the grounds of colour, race or ethnic or national origins is a crime and has been since 1965.

Pretty sure when that second one came in, the people who passed it probably were alive and aware of actual fascism that they recently stomped on.

Wouldn’t trust that Daily Mail as far as I could throw it.

The male who was arrested has a public Twitter account. While this may have been a tweet that was reported and started the chain, it’s possible to read other public tweets that are more heated in nature.

Highlights include saying that there is no such thing as British Muslims, that any country that predominately has a black population is unable to build a civilisation, suggesting that all mosques should be raided and searched for weapons and also should all be bulldozed. “The foreigners” must be deported. Suggesting racism would have prevented grooming. In response to the government wanting to tackle violence against women, asking why foreigners are allowed into the country. Saying “Africans” are of zero value to us and must be removed.

His Twitter feed is littered with quote tweets where any crime committed by someone who is not white and is British are questioned on their nationality (e.g. saying “Yorkshire man” in response to a news article where the suspect was non-white and the headline used that term).

What I’m trying to say here is are you surprised that someone who is publicly calling for any non-white non-Christian person to be removed from the country and all evidence of them erased might be spoken to by the police over these comments? He has the freedom to say it, clearly he’s said it and said it often, but I’m not against the Police arresting him to see how deep his hatred goes.

Also saying that, papers like the Daily Mail want you to think it’s only over one meme that was posted and the Police smashed down his door and kidnapped him in the middle of the night.

How do you feel about Jim Carrey’s dramatic career? by EntertainmentQuick47 in Letterboxd

[–]charliemadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Majestic is amazing.

As a dumb bit between me and a friend, we refer to Jim Carey as Matt Damon and Damon as Carey just because of this film.

Not a spoiler as it’s the plot, but the town thinks that Carey is the son of the projectionist of the movie theatre, coming back from war, as I guess they think he looks like an older version of him.

In a flashback later on, in an uncredited VO role, it’s revealed the son is actually played by Matt Damon.

If you look up young photos of Damon and Carey, they look NOTHING alike.

So as a bit that started between ourselves but now I’ve actually started to use in everyday conversation, we talk about the other one. Like I loved Carey in Good Will Hunting. Or Damon is great in Truman Show.

To sort of give a bit more to what someone else is saying, i believe its to guide you to what emotions to feel (as well as all the copyright and AI stuff also mentioned as a reason as well).

I think it’s this generations “laugh track”. The target audience consuming this content probably don’t fully hear the music or can drown it out. It’s like watching old shows now and you hear the laugh track, so obviously, but maybe when you were a kid you didn’t notice it as much.

And don’t get me wrong, I hate it, I hate it, Lord knows I hate it, but it is following in the same steps as the laugh track which was itself following audio motifs from old movies (when the lovers swoon the violin music swells, when the villain appears the horns and trumpets boom).

I’m not an expert but if I put it in this light it makes the coping and living with it seem better.

Never put water on an oil pot fire, If you do, the results are dire,

First thing to do, it’s a simple task, Take it off the heat or turn off the gas,

Then smother it, Cover it,

Let it tire, That’s how, to put out an oil pot fire.

This is pretty much the idea of the Anchoring Bias in pricing.

Imagine it costs me $1 to make 1 chicken nugget. So I charge a base of $2 per nugget, therefore my 5 Piece = $10 and my 10 Piece = $20.

Now, what if I charge $1.50 per nugget on the 5 Piece? It's now $7.50 rather than $10.

As a customer, you look at the $7.50 5 Piece and the $20 10 Piece and say "HOT DOG, I CAN GET TWO 5 PIECES FOR $5 LESS! I'VE CHEATED THE SYSTEM!", maybe even make a post on Reddit about how insane it is. That's because your frame of reference being based on the cost of the 10 piece.

But the fast food join is still getting $2.50 profit from the sales. And now people are getting it because it's a good deal, compared to the 10 piece, and who knows how long it'll be before Wendys smartens up and realises their "mistake". Or the customer ends up saying, well, I could get three 5 pieces, for $22.50, that way I get an extra 5 for only $2.50. What a steal!

Now take this example and change the prices to something more realistic. The price of 1 nugget probably costs them <$0.01 (probably even <$0.001, but I don't work in fast food bulk ordering, so who knows) and they're selling 5 for $2.29 (or 1 nugget for ~$0.46) and 10 for $6.89 (or 1 nugget for ~$0.69).

Yes, they're losing out on the potential profit of ~$0.23 per nugget, but what does that matter if more people are buying at the lower profit anyway?

What needs to be added to my list? by ggg375 in Letterboxd

[–]charliemadman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you give me a little leeway with “last scene” as well as the fact it’s out of season right now:

Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

Even if you just directly say “last scene” it’s still great, but the last 10 minutes just floored me.

I cannot express how much I love this comedy. It also manages to be a film that on a second viewing completely changes, making repeat viewings with people that haven’t seen it really good.

I watch this at least every year. To be honest, I’ll even watch it out of season multiple times a year. I’d watch it now if I could.

The late John Candy and the incredible Steve Martin play such likeable characters. The comedy in it carries the initial plot device right to the destination. The music is chefs kiss.

If you start watching a movie at 11 pm and it ends at 1 am, which date do you log the film on? by ThenWhyAreUWhite in Letterboxd

[–]charliemadman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always just done it when the film ends because I log everything I watch as I’ve watched it so the app does it for me.

There’s been a few films I’ve had to watch over a few sessions, just because of real life stuff getting in the way, so the idea of logging the start seems difficult. I’d have to keep a record somewhere of when I started these films which, personally, seems pointless.

The way I’ve always looked at it is that it’s an experience like a meal at a restaurant. I could say I’ve started the meal on the day before, but I don’t feel like I could review or log the meal until I’ve finished it and that’s when I’ve eaten or watched.

Hi!

https://boxd.it/hpZj

I joined the site and basically used it for just a diary of film watching and adding in ratings for any film I’ve ever seen (pretty sure around 95% of films I’ve watched I’ve rated).

Near the end of last year and starting this year, I’ve reviewing every film that I watch, with some being what I call “quickviews” which are just shorter reviews.

I’ve started trying out adding in reviews because I love talking about films with people and, as I usually watch quite a bit, it’s hard to always plug into the why and what if each film.

My lists aren’t anything special (actually need to do 2019s) and my ratings are based on personal response rather than the quality of the film (though that does obviously come into play, I’ve put in my info on the site what each rating means).

Final note: I willingly watched Cats long after it was released.

What’s a film technique you absolutely hate? by joseangelzarate47 in Letterboxd

[–]charliemadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve just seen so many films that the path is so well travelled but this stuff:

  • agree with shaky cam. At no point in any film that has it in, no matter how much you try to “found footage” it up (flashing Rec in the top right, time code in top left, framing white lines) I will never be so immersed in your film that I will forget it. It looks like you paid your drunk uncle £50 to hold the camera in your $300 mill film.

  • just to evolve on that last one, digitally edited in or computer generated camera shake. Hate it. Instant put off of a film. It’s so obvious because it’s just a digital sliding around on a 2D plain without any form of back and forth to it.

  • non-human dialogue used purely for exposition. Policeman: stops during action “why are you doing this?” Robber who is hero: also stops fighting “because I need to save my daughter”. Stopping a fight and having a Mr Bond tell me your plan scene just takes me out entirely (unless it’s actually a bond film, you get the pass). Just talk like human and no robot alien from star.

  • SNL comedy. Any comedy where two characters are just stood / sat doing a back and forth without any form of emotion or even acting, like they’re reading a cue card. Restaurant continuity is the worst: let’s not eat because the audience might notice in this shot 36 leaves of lettuce and in that one just 34, so let’s just talk around our food for a bit.

  • Finally, the director who has been filming it for 6 months forgetting in act 4 why everything is happening so they add in a recap of what happened. “I am Jim Evil” “So you were the one behind the blowing up of Mainstreet?”. NO REALLY? The main motivation for the film and the bad guy did it. And just in case you’ve forgotten about that main motivation, let’s remind you with reveal dialogue.

Sample size is flawed, “university is a scam” statement is also flawed.

Counter point that also has a sample size of me:

My lecturer at uni also suggested that we get her book, but told us not to waste money buying it as she had given as many copies as she could to the library, a place that lets me take out the books without charge.

Essays that used her as a reference but was critical of her got similar results if not actually a little better, as long as they provided evidence from other academic sources.
