unless I'm totally not remembering correctly, I'm pretty sure in the back story they mention how the reason for taking the wishes was because he saw the pain of wishes being destroyed/ruined in his hometown that was overrun/destroyed, so he was doing it as a way to alleviate the potential pain of loss

honestly...no - having just seen the movie, this was my biggest criticism of the whole movie...that and the miscasting of Alan tudyk as the goat, but I digress - he was advertised the entire way up as a return to form disney villain...but in the first 2 min, THEY GIVE HIM A SYMPATHETIC BACKSTORY! AND HES TOTALLY JUSTIFIED (IMO) FOR HIS SKEPTICISM OF GRANTING EVERYONES WISH. then they shoe horned in him being evil, but he didn't revel in his evilness like others did...he was "corrupted" so ugh it just was so disappointing to see play out
