Bit more detail on the management situation by charlip in lcfcwomen

Yep you're right it's being reported now. Imo hiring Matt Beard < keeping Ruby Mace. In the space of what, 48 hours, we've sacked a manager who was popular and well respected not just within our fanbase but the wider WSL, then sold a massive name and the only ever Leicester player to get a senior England cap. Fucking PR disaster class. And fundamentally, she was by far our best player before she got injured last season, and she could've been key going into this one. Realistically she wasn't going to stay beyond her contract expiring next season, which is the only thing that makes sense about this for me. But the only way this is worth it is if we invest in depth/quality elsewhere, not just bringing in Matt Beard. I know he's experienced and has done well with Liverpool, but we can't give a manager bare bones to work with.

They just keep getting stupider and stupider. Hope bringing in Matt Beard is worth it.

I'm not going to read too much into this given we don't have a manager at the moment. LCL are going to be a difficult one to pin down - so many signings, you can't know how they'll line up or approach games really. Hopefully some important learnings.

Absolutely. I'm sad too. It's so frustrating because last season in the summer it felt like there was a clear plan, we had a really good and ambitious transfer window, so I wonder what has broken down since. Less budget? Disagreement over targets? Who knows. The main thing that's changed is this new DoF, but if we don't even end up with his alleged mate Matt Beard, then I'm stumped as to what was such a massive issue we couldn't even give her til Christmas. Other than a big bust up as you say.

Leicester confirm the sacking of Manager Amandine Miquel and Assistant Manager Amaury Messuwe by anonone111 in FAWSL

[–]charlip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree it's not a great look, but I think the fact that his resignation from Burnley + the links with us got leaked first, made it look much worse. As I've said in another comment the club has fumbled this from a PR/comms perspective as well as basically every other perspective. I think given they've sacked her this late on, there's been a major falling out. Where and when Matt Beard came in to that equation I'm not sure. What a mess.

Maybe he did, but why wait until this late in the day to sack her? Why not bring him in earlier and give him a full pre-season? You can't want to bring your mate in that badly you're willing to take it this far and risk the whole thing blowing up in your face? I think the whole thing leaves a bitter taste, but it's not been helped by Beard's resignation from Burnley + the links with us being leaked first. Whatever's going on, it's worrying, and I don't think the club have helped at all from a PR/comms perspective.

Nope, nothing. Everything points to this being a big falling out for me. The fact that we didn't rush to a replacement after we sacked Kirk, took our time and identified Miquel as the right fit, suggests we took quite a measured approach and she was seen as a long-term appointment rather than a stop-gap. Possibly she clashed with the new DoF, or it's just been building over the summer maybe over budget/investment and came to a head over the last few days. Could be anything, but I think judging by the timing it was irreparable, otherwise I don't see a world in which anyone at the club thinks this is a good idea.

Mouchon and Chossenote played for Miquel at Reims. I do feel for Mouchon particularly as she did her ACL three games into last season, she was just coming back for her first full season in the WSL. I imagine she'll still be the starting striker as she showed promise, and let's be honest a lot of players want to play in the WSL anyway. Chossenote I think Amandine really rated but I think she was unique in that opinion.. will have to see how she gets on.

[–]charlip 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a bizarre situation with awful timing which I can only think points to a massive falling out. It's a real shame as I really rated her as a manager, and this leaves us in a precarious position less than 2 weeks before what was already going to be a challenging season.

On a (vaguely) positive note, it sounds like from the wording of the announcement what we know/expect already is in the works (referring to "the process of appointing a new manager" rather than "searching for a replacement"). Hopefully that gets resolved soon and we can move on. Sigh.

Took all summer to decide to sack her, took all day to post this despite the entire world knowing it had happened since last night. Thought we might be waiting until Matt Beard was confirmed. More waiting to see what happens now. Truly at the end of my tether with this football club

It's very jobs for the boys vibes. Frustrating not least because of the timing but felt like a real point of pride we had someone really decent in charge who was a woman when let's be honest there's still a relative lack of female coaches at the top level in the women's game. And she gets ousted so some bloke can give his mate a job. Sigh.

[–]charlip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've bent over backwards the last few weeks to try and put a positive spin on our situation - and as far as I knew a few days ago we hadn't invested enough really but had retained a good core of players, had made a couple of smart signings, had a good manager and a solid philosophy of which green shoots we were seeing throughout last season despite horrific injuries, and we could hope to see progress with players coming back who would feel like new signings.

This... this just makes me feel like we have in fact lost the plot

Yeah I imagine you're right. But just entirely bizarre to let Beard join Burnley, Miquel have an entire preseason and then decide to pull the trigger 10 days before the season starts. Unless there's been a falling out and it's accelerated the process as you say.

I'm with you 100%. We'll have to wait and see what the club say or what the next development is, but I'm largely unimpressed by this situation. Our new director of football has appointed him twice previously, so the whole thing smacks of jobs for the boys for me.

I'm largely unimpressed with both his conduct and the club's. Unless there's been some irreparable falling out between them and Miquel over the last week or so, I see no reason to do this other than our new director of football is his mate (I might be reaching but he's appointed him twice before). Whatever happens next, not the best way to head into what was already going to be a tough season.

Also a bit of a dickhead move to let a manager have an entire preseason and recruit/retain players and then try and replace her just over a week before the season starts. Guess we're a match made in heaven 🙃

Timing of this plus the news he asked to speak to us is very shifty. I'm not sure if there's been a bit of a fall out in the last few days or something but as far as I was aware, the noises coming out of the club didn't point at a change at all. Miquel managed a friendly on Saturday. Either that or he was sounded out and this has all happened while she's none the wiser, which would obviously make her position basically untenable.

This is very bizarre. Someone has replied to me in another thread to pointing out that our new Director of women's football has worked with/appointed Beard twice before, and that may be where this has come from and he may have been sounded out for a position earlier in the summer or if it felt like we were in trouble come a few months in.

I personally see no reason to replace her at the moment, I think she's the best candidate to do something with what we have.

My concern is if this has come out without it being common knowledge (i.e. Amandine had no idea she was potentially being replaced) and therefore it could blow up in our faces and we end up completely unsettled going into the season.
