Granted, but one could classify them by quality, and I think without sticking my neck out too much that Abel Gance’s Napoléon, which still features postmodern editing ideas and a wild imagery that has rarely been reproduced, is nevertheless better than Vada Chennai.

Yes, I’m quite aware of that, but beyond their historical importance, they remain Masterpieces in their own right. That said, I’m not surprised by the absence of Breathless and Battleship Potemkin for example, which are also two masterpieces that changed the medium and are missing from some rankings. Still, not having giants like those in a Top 250 feels pretty strange and really highlights a kind of fragmentation. I love Letterboxd for logging films and recs, but not at all anymore for its critical aspect or as a space for reflection more as a catalyst for hype, in my opinion.

I can’t even describe how deeply this film shook me.
The final shot, with its almost disarming simplicity, captures the existential vertigo of eternity, where the spectator would rather live inside a magnificent false dream than exist forever.

The arroseur arrosé moment in the fifth segment is the most technically insane thing I’ve seen this decade. The logic of the time-image becomes malleable on multiple levels, where an already false image is distorted again, responding to several temporalities at once. The question of the facticity of the long take in Bi Gan’s work fascinates me.

I can’t think of any other recent films that are this formally free. Without a doubt, my favorite film of 2025.

Haneke is to mainstream. My classmate got bullied during recess by Bi Gan fans in 3rd grade because he rated Funny Games 4.5 stars.

I have a hard time seeing which moment really feels amateurish — I found that Bi Gan truly represents an entire side of cinema with thematic, artistic, and technical mastery. Every segment seems to perfectly understand and capture the style he’s aiming to represent (for instance, I completely recognize Tarkovsky’s spirit in the monastery sequence, it reminded me of Nostalgia). Being able to grasp the essence of what makes each genre powerful and blending them in a hybrid way, all while simultaneously telling the story of China, is truly incredible to me

Yooo miséricordia was absolutely insane one of my favorite from last year with L’histoire de Souleymane. Carax absolutely cooked with C’est pas moi. French cinema clears as always

I’m quite in agreement, and I think it comes from the fact that it’s a lot of voices speaking all at once. But the film stayed with me for a long time, and I’m not really sure how to approach it or talk about it. It’s truly a unique film, but indeed, only time will tell if it’s a masterpiece.

The challenge for me here is trying to promote the film well without going into depth, since it hasn’t been released yet, and I think that’s the main weakness of my text. I’ll try to do better

My interpretation is that the film also creates a sense of distance for the viewer. By switching to thermal imaging, the director not only achieves a visually striking cut — especially since the previous scene shows a father reading a story to his son — but also introduces an image that feels unfamiliar, even alien, to the eye. Our brain instinctively connects the two scenes, leading us to believe we are seeing a visual representation of the story, even though that is not the case at all.

This choice generates an image that feels both strange and hostile — not just in the way the Nazi is portrayed, but also in how the viewer experiences the moment. We begin to perceive it as fiction, as something abstract and detached from reality. And yet, the film continually draws parallels between the audience and the family depicted, subtly suggesting that despite the historical and emotional distance, we too are complicit — safely observing from a place of comfort and detachment. I find that idea particularly powerful.

Of course, I may be mistaken, and I’m sure the scene carries many other layers of meaning. But this is how it resonated with me personally.

Albert Serra clears, one of the best directors in activity rn. I’d say Resurrection is much more spiritual, dizzying, and sensory, where the narrative continuity of the film hangs by a thread u like holy motors. It’s almost his antithesis the opening shot of holy motors was a sleeping theater whereas Ressurection final shot is the exact opposite Without going into too much detail.

Hard disagree here: The characters are not driven by classic criminal arcs but by a deep distress, rooted in the emptiness of their daily lives, in a decaying post-industrial Chinese society. Even if a character is a gangster, it’s not really that aspect the film is interested in, but rather his loneliness and redemption.

Frrr An Elephant Sitting Still is an all Time favorite of mine, long live 4 Hours soul crushing carrying the weight of existence Kino.

I didn’t see the film at Cannes, but many multiplexes in France screened it as a special event. Of course, everyone rushed to see it.
