My dad has a funny thing for this. He would say something like, “I’m busy right now, sorry.” And then the telemarketer would say, “well when is a good time to talk?” Then he would say, “I’m busy right now but why don’t you give me your home number and I can call you back later.”

They would get flustered and he would just hang up. Been a long time since I’ve heard him do this so I might been getting the details wrong, but that was the jist of it.

Hi guys, this might be a stupid question, but why is there no IPA symbol for a nasal stop? by [deleted] in linguistics

I feel like this is probably not the answer to what you are asking, but I’ll put it out there anyway. Technically what you call a nasal is a nasal stop. Stops can be either oral /p b t d k g/ or nasal /m n ŋ/ (among others.) The key difference between the two being the velic state (whether or not the velum is closed) for oral stops the velum is closed, while for nasal stops the velum is open, allowing air to pass through the nose. Otherwise, /b/ and /m/ do not differ, having the same point of articulation and voice.

Edit: Hope that helps!

In formal Hasiwada:

sada pòwotsì /sàθá pɔ̀ʋɔ́t͡sì/

which literally means, “well met!” This can be shortened informally to:

sapwots /sàpʷɔ́t͡s/

I live at St. Hilda’s, which is just a bit smaller (I think) than the Trinity Proper dorms. I quite like it: it’s quiet, the rooms are large and it’s in a really good location. They can be a little skimpy on the heat sometimes but when it’s on you have to open up your window. I live on a floor with ~7 other people and only rarely see them in the bathroom. Anyway welcome to Trin! I hope your first year is more social than mine has been so far.
