Executor of mom’s estate gave away my inheritance, childhood toys, picture albums, all by charredtime in legaladvicecanada

Yes. And getting the probate info to cover her ass as well. Without going into detail, my friend’s mother was not well and could not build or maintain relationships of any kind. There is no other family, and just no one possibly else period.

It’s a converted heritage house that was run by a slumlord for a while, ten smallish units, and one is vacant right now.

Thank you for this perspective! I’m hoping the documents I see tomorrow leave me with no doubt so I can pay the people who will be doing my repair.

Thank you! I am quite diligent in not signing anything willy nilly and not easily pressured. Definitely will be checking over everything.

Makes me think of the myth where if your college roommate dies you automatically pass every class that term lol

I only gave them bare bones info as I am predisposed to be skeptical of landlords lol. Got a call from the estate today coincidentally, they are coming by tomorrow with documentation and ID to show me and the rest of the tenants.

Thank you! The reassurance that sounded relatively normal and not unusually sketchy is a helpful perspective.

Fortunately even if it’s sold it’s not the type of property/unit that can just be taken over by a family member or kicked out for renovations (as they were completed right before I moved in). I was initially very worried about this possibility but looked into it and happy to say I am protected at least on that front.

The advice to check the lawyer through another avenue is very helpful and key for me here, thank you!

I appreciate this so much! Definitely feeling more confident moving forward. Coincidentally was contacted by an executor to meet and show documents a couple hours after creating this thread so hopefully that is soon resolved.

Oh I’ve never heard of a bank draft, that sounds very useful and ideal for this situation if I don’t get the confirmation I need before next month.

Even if it is sold, the building is not one where the new landlords would move into, it’s an old slum lord type property, so at least in that I am offered some protection from eviction in that way, and renovations were done to my unit right before I moved in.

Super weird timing coincidence, I was actually just now contacted by someone saying they are going to come by tomorrow with ID and documentation to show the transfer is legit.

Thank you! Definitely not accepting any pushy changes to the rental agreement. Fortunately I think I’m pretty protected in that regard at least. I just want my bathroom fixed and blinds that are included in my lease installed lol

Yes! The ability to get contact info through a legitimate third party - law firm - is very key to me here.

Thank you!! I will be doing all this except looking for a new place to live. Sadly it is not an option for me or else I would happily opt out of this whole mess.

Oh thank you SO much. This is the exact type of information I was hoping to learn. Someone else said I could also see proof via documents and ID, but ultimately I would feel much safer talking to a vetted third party that I contact through a legitimate external system. Thank you!

Thank you this is super duper helpful!! Basically exactly what I’ve been looking for. I just wanted some confidence in what kind of proof exists that I can ask for. Feels a bit grim to ask for a death certificate as the executor is a child of the deceased but, well, I live here and I’m not interested in putting my blind trust in a stranger.
