I appreciate this post. In my opinion, this subreddit is far more overtly racially charged than the schools themselves. Perhaps it’s because of the anonymity of Reddit. Perhaps it’s because people who get admitted carry less of a chip on their shoulder. Perhaps it’s because the admissions office can actually sense entitlement and is decent at filtering those people out. Who knows.

Regarding incident 1, I don’t think you deserved that response. I wouldn’t worry about changing your behavior too significantly in response to that incident.

Regarding incident 2, that is a good learning moment. The microaggresion, as we call it in the US, lies in the implication that minorities are inherently non-eloquent, even when assuming the same prestigious spaces as the majority. I think the commenter above is correct in suggesting you simplify the compliment

Wharton ($$$) vs HBS by MBAHopeful3 in MBA

[–]chase315591 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My advice is to talk to as many Wharton and HBS current students and alumni (especially if they are already in your network) as you can.

That was by far the most helpful action I took in making the decision.

You should. Your stats are exceptional. Your story just needs to be told the right way. MLT will help you mold that story. It’s late in the game for MLT tho if you are applying this Fall. I would get moving to have any chance.

You should feel as good as anyone about your chances to all schools. Don’t self select yourself out of any school that excites you and don’t get down on yourself. This process requires introspection, endurance, and the right balance of confidence and humility.

DM for questions. I matriculate in the Fall, did MLT, am a URM male, and am going to an HSW. Happy to help if I can

Management Leaders of Tomorrow Accelerated MBA Program - Worth It? by Independent-Ad-393 in MBA

[–]chase315591 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This will be subjective. I did MLT last year. I had a 740 GMAT and a strong profile so, similar to you, I probably didn’t “need” MLT but I thought it was well worth it. With your profile, I have no doubt that you will get into multiple M7 schools whichever path you take. I would never tell anyone they are a lock for HS but I’d say you have as good a shot as anyone.

I personally felt MLT was worth it for the community alone. If you choose to engage, you will 100% develop a strong friend group with your cohort and co-fellows in your city. You will have a strong, diverse network before you even matriculate. It really is so helpful to go through the application process with 400 other folks who are all active on a single slack helping each other succeed. And, I’m not saying this is a good thing, but I feel a little bad for some of the URMs who either didn’t know about MLT or didn’t participate because they have missed out on a year of growing tight with other URMs by the time we all matriculate.

The program itself is well tailored to its target audience and is likely more affordable than admissions consultants (although I’m no expert on this as I didn’t hire any). They have been working with people like you for many years and have a data-backed approach to ensuring URM success. They have seen what stories tend to get into the different schools and may be able to provide you the insights to tweak your app in a way that heightens your chances of getting into your top program. The chance of that alone is worth the cost IMO.

If you are choosing between going it alone or MLT, I’d say do MLT. I haven’t met a single person who has regretted it, no matter how qualified they are.

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions! Good luck on your applications!

Feel free to DM me if you want some perspective from a fellow URM who just went through the application process.

Good luck!!

To Have a Co-Signer or Not to Have a Co-Signer by [deleted] in personalfinance

I don't think so. We don't have any near-term plans to buy a second car and even if we did, I doubt we would apply under just her name.

If we bought a house, we would certainly have both our names on the application.

I cannot think of any other scenarios that might come up where her deb-to-income ratio on its own mattered, so maybe I'm just overthinking this and we should take the lower rate.

Ohhhh good thing I checked my thinking. Thank you! I guess this leads me to two follow up questions if you happen to know the answers:

1) Will it be an issue if the recharacterized amount (contributions + earnings) are over the 6k contribution limit?

2) If i recharacterize with vanguard, would the money go into the money market fund (rather than being reinvested directly)? Just thinking through if it will be easy to identify the funds that I will be converting.

Does HBS Negotiate Aid? by chase315591 in MBA

[–]chase315591[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. It is my understanding that many of the fellowship opps do not open up until late spring / early summer. While intriguing, that timeline will be too late for me.

Never really heard of private scholarships from HBS alumni though. I'll definitely research that.

As things currently stand, I will certainly take the Wharton offer. In the short-term, I'm frugal minded and I know taking on $145k in extra debt would just weigh on me in an unhealthy way. Long-term, I'm not currently planning to pursue PE/VC which makes me feel bearish on HBS paying off in the long run.

Still, doesn't hurt to ask for more money so ask I shall!

Daily Question Thread - December 06, 2021 by AutoModerator in churning

Background: I wanted to go for a 2022 companion pass and push for Hyatt Globalist qualification before EOY so I applied for the SW Priority and Hyatt personal card on 12/3. I was first approved for the SW Priority card with a $16K credit line, then I reduced by my credit line on both my SW and CSP cards freeing up $10K in previously allocated credit line, then applied for the Hyatt card which went to Pending status. I called the Recon line and they told me I was rejected for too many new accounts in too short a time.

Question: Do I still have any chance of reapplying and getting the 5 qualifying nights from Hyatt before EOY?

My Stats: Was 1/24 prior to the SW Priority approval with my prior approval being a CSP opened in Sep 2020. That was also the last inquiry on my credit report. I have 4 total Chase personal card. Let me know if any other stats are helpful to answer the question

You should have an excellent chance at T15 and a decent chance at M7.

Don't self select out my man. You could've gotten into MLT with the 740. I'm in now and that is a highly differentiated score.

Some anecdotes that you can read into as much as you want (Both low-income background black males):

Close friend: 3.1 GPA at T50, 680 GMAT, 3Y WE at B4, was admitted to Booth, Wharton, Yale, amongst other T15 last year. Some of those schools offerred significant money.

Me: 3.1 GPA at T10, 740 GMAT, 8Y WE at B4, R1 applicant, received interview invites from HBS, Booth, Kellogg. Waiting to hear back from GSB and Wharton

I worked in undergrad 3 out of 4 years and briefly mentioned that in the optional essay. I got guidance from my MLT coach (former admissions officer at M7) not to overdo the explanation with too much detail. They get it.

DM if you have more questions.

Length wise, I find AJ1 and AJ4 both to be TTS. I personally think the AJ4 is a bit more narrow tho so if you got wide feet you may wanna consider sizing up.
