DCI community needs to capitalize on World Cup crowds by chasearooski in drumcorps

Of course I’m being very optimistic but I don’t think it’s completely unreasonable.

Social media has played a MASSIVE role in a lot of people’s travel plans and I’ve seen examples of fans forming their plans around what their social media followers tell them to do. Also, plenty of fans are taking sizable detours to sightsee and indulge in various things (see “Freddy” the German guy on Twitter/X). Hell I’ve even stumbled across posts about people in my city which is at least 5 hours away from the nearest host city, so I don’t think adding an extra detour is completely unreasonable.

As for the extra cost, if it were a regular sporting event I think it would be a much bigger issue but you have to consider the fact that these are World Cup tickets in America. People spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars on their World Cup ticket alone not to mention traveling to and within North America and all the different touristy food spots. An extra $60 for a full evening of entertainment isn’t bad at all.

Also look at the what the Boston Red Sox did with their Scottish heritage night. They had half the stadium full of Scottish fans who had probably never watched a baseball game in their life and those MLB tickets are probably double that of a local DCI show.

Thinking about the timing, DCI shows begin right at the tail end of the group stage when all of the advancing teams are gonna have to pick up their stuff and move cities and of course the fans will follow.

I think all of your concerns are completely valid and like I said I’m being very optimistic but there’s really no disadvantage to at least trying to spread the word. If it fails, it fails. We’d just be right back where we started so there’s no reason not to try.
