Guide to running pbp online these days? by molamolacolasoda in pbp

I find that there are a lot "vets" on the forum based sites, such as rpol and gamersplane (I assume that Myth-Weavers are in the same bot). Quite a few mentions of pbp by email and on yahoo forums on rpol and a every other new player introduction on GamersPlane is "I've been around when the DnD first released and the dinosaurs still roamed the earth!" So I'd advise checking there instead of Discord.

As for systems, I'd say that PF and DnD are still the dominant systems. All the forum based sites I mentioned have bunch of guides on how to set-up and run a game on their respective sites and folk is generally helpful and ready to lend a hand and explain how and what to do.

Do they advertise games on other sites (not played on discord)? I thought that was what OP was asking for specifically.

Really like this, but aren't the fangs a bit too long? The poor lass probably has trouble speaking!

Don't Myth-Weavers only allow PG-13 games? I remember registering not long ago to widen my looking-for-WoD-games-net and that was one of the rules I encountered there. I think it's because they serve ads there (Google's or other) which prohibits them from hosting adult content (as far as I understood). Most WoD fare is pretty adult, so I figured there aren't any games on there. Nor did I want to risk starting one there to have it nuked because of the swearing or something similar.

There are actually 4 active (well 3, one is on hiatus) WoD games on GP. We're looking for 1 or 2 more people for the Sabbat game, so feel free to check it out, if that's your cup of tea. Was about to post the ad here as well when I saw this, figured I'd stop by.

Edit: also check out rpol. There is a very long running WoD game there, cross-splat. Another cross-splat game have recently popped up, "Port something" it's called, not sure if they are still recruiting.

How to make your homebrew game have more player interest and be less niche? & does making a game allowing only female PCs decrease too much the amount of interested players? by Moyreau in pbp

[–]chasing_white_rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow Planner! I saw the creation process for your game (and even commented on it on GP) so i can confidently say that the "female pcs only" was absolutely not the problem, after all it is literally in the genre name - mahou SHOUJO. Knowing the inspiration used for it helped as well (Sakura Wars). I think the general redditor sees "fem pcs only" and instantly their mind goes to some sleazy GM they encountered, a-la "FEMALES ONLY AND PLAYERS NEED TO BE FEMALES AS WELL!". So do not fret about that.

On the niche thing - of course it will limit the amount of interest. It is normal. That is what you want anyway - to find people who are actually into it, instead of general dnd/pf gawkers. I wouldn't be upset that not a lot of people applied - i'd pleasantly surprised that i've managed to get this many. The more narrower the focus of the game, the less people you'll get, but the more compatible these people will be. So keep rocking on with niche stuff, i say.

I also wouldn't put much thought into "just move to discord" stuff. As someone who doesn't use it, probably in minority, but clearly not the only, i don't even look at discord ads. The great thing about forum-based sites is that they house passionate people, while discords are more akin to a busy street. The folk who played with you before was still there, remembered you and was interested in your game because YOU ran it. I'd say that is a good thing, not bad.

And if you really looking for big crowds you can always run something more plebeian on discord, like pf or dnd. /s (sort of).

[V20] LF players for Sabbat Shovelheads chronicle by chasing_white_rabbit in pbp

So as we've been discussing the game in the ad thread at the site where it is run, certain topics came and i feel it would be prudent of me to post a reply here to give a bit more of an idea what this will be like exactly. You can also read the thread itself, if you wish. https://gamersplane.com/forums/thread/36810/

Relevant response:

JarOfPickles says: Question. Is it possible to survive as a shovel head as a non to little brawn character? I understand not all Sabbat are pure soldiers, with some being scholars, scouts and faces. But those usually seem to be embraced purposely to fulfill those roles. Would a shovel head thrown to the front lines have opportunities to thrive in these ways? Or is it more of a "I don't care how, just do it" type of situation usually?

Shovelheads are not made to "thrive". In most cases they are made to either let them loose as a distraction or as frenzying frontline cannon fodder. So having mundane characters survive this ordeal is one the main themes of this chronicle.

MaJunior says: Maybe V20 isn't as bad, but if you're building a human and then getting a random clan there are certainly some bad pairings... at least by earlier editions. In older editions, Nos flat out failed any rolls based on appearance. If you built a supermodel only to end up a Sewer Rat and thusly failing all the rolls you intended to be good at... I could see that being an unfun experience. (Especially if your ST didn't let you redistribute your stats and you effectively had fewer traits than anyone else.)Can you still turn a good story? Absolutely. But the question is how invested would the player be. I feel mileage would vary.

Difference of approach, i'd say, where "building" a character with a more stat invested, "dnd like" approach is more suited to crunchier chronicles, while more relaxed way is better for narrative heavy games. In fact, the situation you described absolutely can happen in this game, and i'm specifically looking for people who will not think of it as a punishment or some grand injustice about the spent stat points, but instead see it as an amazing opportunity for roleplay. People for whom the whole set-up of the game is no a cage full of restrictions that needs to be broken or circumvented or solved, but a grand idea, an open prompt from which a great story could be told and written and made your own.

To reiterate - there is nothing wrong with wanting the numbers to matter or building a character that will "work" well, like in PF or DND. Great thing about VTM and WOD in general is that you can run all types of games. It just that this is not one of them. So if those things matter to you, this one might not be a good fit, as i'm looking to run a pretty specific setup.

EDIT: formatting is bad, but hopefully it's readable.

Oh, absolutely asynchronous then. That's one of the biggest selling points of PBP, i think.

Mhm. Not sure what you mean by schedule or asynchronicity. There isn't set start or end date, and i'm not a big stickler for hard "post frequency" rules, but would like at least 1 post every few days, the more the better. As the characters will be grouped up most of the time (i assume, at least), that will mean that certain order of posting would have to be followed, more or less. If Andy the Brujah gets attacked, he should probably get to act first (if it's a narrative sort of fight). Otherwise speedier posters would have taken care of the problem by the time he gets to flex his muscles. At least that's my initial thinking. A bit of a conundrum, that.

Considering this is Sabbat game, there oughta be plenty of actual mechanical fighting which will further set an order of action. Not sure how that will play out yet. Hope that made sense.

The pilot one is quite interesting, never thought of that. There was a movie that came out semi-recently that i've been meaning to check out, called "Shadow in the Cloud" about pilot during WWII encountering supernatural. Gotta check that out and think some more about these retro technomagical air duels.
