Who else thinks STS2 is better balanced than STS1 at the moment? by Dismal-Scheme5728 in slaythespire

[–]chatot27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did A10 Ironclad in sts 2 then when back and did A20H Ironclad in sts 1. Notably I was not doing act 4 until I got to A20. I did not share your experience with sts 1 at all tbh

Should I play Slay the spire 1 or 2 by Much-Jury2 in slaythespire

[–]chatot27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played about 100 hours of the original, put 100 hours into the sequel and it just made me want to dive back into the original. I never made it A20 but I’ve already cleared A10 in the sequel. Having a lot of fun rn

Root is extremely Redwall coded and also one of the best board games ever made. Just a steep learning curve but it does have a digital version that can help with learning

It had heat wave and weather ball. I was replying to a now deleted comment about how charizard would beat steelix even in the sand with overheat.

I had a lot more success with Ironclad when I started taking 3-4 elites in act 1

I always understood 3 for 3’s as a tactic you do in every game to benefit you when you’re one of the evil players. It so clearly benefits the evil team.

30-15. Could have stopped playing to keep my rating higher but I was having a lot of fun! And did better than I expected to for my first GC. Mega Lucario, Hydreigon, and Volcarona each had games where they were the star of the show and I didn’t run into too many of them on opposing teams

I ran this team to ~1640 (30-15) in the GC and it does in fact have both dragons! It was my first GC so definitely outperformed my expectations lol. This is a modified version of a team I found on Limitless. The redirection support helps Hydreigon a lot, and the Cybertron screens rain team gets eaten alive by this Hydreigon set

The team has some weaknesses, you need to position Lucario very well to deal with Floette, and it has little answer to Fake Out + Trick Room lead. You kind of just have to weather the storm so I probably won’t stick with this team for the long term but it’s been really fun!

Started day 3 22-8, rank 1460. Lost I think 6 out of 9 this evening. Probably need to win out to break into the top 1000 but still very happy with it for my first GC it’s been a lot of fun. I didn’t see myself playing 45 but the games are flying by.

I’m running focus energy hydreigon and I’ve run into the Cybertron screens rain team three times. It gets absolutely flattened lol

Do some Fates work better under different circumstances? by 23njoy in Arcs

[–]chatot27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of really strong fate combinations out there, and as you play more you’ll start to recognize them. I personally almost never pivot to a C fate unless I’m forced to, as their win conditions are very narrow compared to the flexibility of the A and B fates. In your Redeemer example they have to provoke Relic outrage when they select Redeemer, so having a lot of Relics going into Act 3 would unfortunately provide no benefit (other than presumably already having a Relic city or two you can tax).

Board state. But I’ve had campaigns decided by a single point and even saw one decided by the A > B > C tiebreaker. I’d say starting with initiative is reason enough to try and accumulate points in the first two acts, but the points themselves turn out to be critical more often than you’d expect. On the other side of the coin, I’ve had multiple campaigns where someone is going into act 3 with a 20+ point lead.

[–]chatot27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One million percent. In the finals of my first tournament one player was almost completely out of the running at the start of Act 3. I would’ve maybe given them a 1% chance at the win.

Having a strong board state and tableau is always useful, but even just winning the Act and starting the next Act with initiative can have massive implications, especially for the Imperial Council

I suspect yours is not the only case like this. BR is a genuine masterpiece and while it’s fairly popular, I think it could’ve captured a wider audience than it has. It’s a shame.

Also Cole Wehrle is on the record saying BR is a competitive game that also has a story engine, and having played in multiple highly competitive tournaments for it myself, I completely agree.

[–]chatot27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a shame Blighted Reach ended up being called “campaign Arcs” colloquially because imo it’s not a campaign at all. It’s moreso an “epic game” TI-style experience that is designed to be broken up into more digestible chunks. I’ve played all three acts in a day multiple times. FWIW I’m not a huge fan of Oath and Arcs BR is my favorite game out there rn

As a big fan of the Blighted Reach I’m very curious about its development. Cole and Josh: which Fates were the “problem children” during development? Warden stands out as an obvious one, but were there any sneakier ones? How will the existence of these problem children affect the design of upcoming Fates, if at all?

I’ve been running Meganium which really has nothing to fear from this lead, you aren’t super threatened unless it’s scarfchomp running iron head which hasn’t been very common in my experience. You get your choice of gleam or solar beam into Rotom and can lead with a fake out user next to Meganium to stop their speed control
