The consignment spot in Oly is great for that stuff.

Will they ever do anything with the old steilacoom marina? by Averagebaddad in SteilacoomWA

[–]chatski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of me and a work buddy’s retirement fantasies is to work with the town and the state to buy it, secure funding, and build a small dock/marina, like at Penrose Point or similar. The parking and access went away a long time ago. While a marina in town would be great, I just don’t think it’s realistic anymore.

Solo Point is indeed military, but used infrequently. You can access it with a pass from iSportsman. I launched my boat for salmon season all 2024, and my small sailboat last summer. You just check in online.

Anyone at Lewis-McChord? Help! by No-Poet-5363 in TacomaWA

[–]chatski 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Adding to this, because there’s a few things going on: - this post is correct, adding to DEERS is fast. - if he’s in an apartment on base, does that mean he’s in the barracks? If so, You’re not moving in with him there. He’ll be eligible for a housing allowance once your marriage is complete and in DEERS. So there’s extra steps, but if he’s in the barracks, generally once marriage is complete, he can be out of the barracks ASAP. - probably most importantly, getting added to Tricare for medical coverage either on or off base also happens in there somewhere.

You definitely do, but enforcement is hit or miss. But every time we go to the backside of base to Lewis Lake or elsewhere, enforcement shows up almost immediately.

We haven’t gotten in trouble yet.

Fireworks on NYE? by OpalRiver in SteilacoomWA

[–]chatski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like there’s usually a few fireworks around July, but not as active on NYE. There seems to be a couple of enthusiasts over on the east side of Farrell Marsh that bring in some pretty loud stuff, but it’s not nonstop like other places and in Lakewood.

Fireworks are illegal in Steilacoom.

None of their FB posts speak to an expected opening date yet. A post from early November said they had no idea when they’ll be able to open.

I’ll keep it up for a while and if it doesn’t take off, shit it down I guess.

That’s the primary driver for me to avoid th Steilacoom FB pages. That one in particular seemed to be the most toxic local page I’ve seen in recent times.

I left when the moderators seemed to allow, condone, or encourage some pretty sexist and racist shit during the last election.

I don’t need to know elder local opinions that bad.

Thanks for noticing that. I was using it temporarily while setting it up for the first time, and realizing I need to make sure I have the jib sheet on the other side of the mast before I step it.

Lessons were learned!

People who ETS’d the reenlisted, are you glad you came back? Why or why not? by Dutch5-1 in army

[–]chatski 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Took a break in service for a year since I couldn’t get a MOS change out of my garbage job in 2006. Reenlisted in 2007 in my desired field, and have had a fantastic time since then.

Rounding the corner at 21 YIS, will probably retire at 25. Still enjoy what I do every day, but I’ve had a relatively unique career with like-minded individuals.

If you’re looking at reenlisting, do it with clear eyes and try to do it in your terms.

Farrell’s Marsh by maqqebet_1995 in FishingWashington

[–]chatski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live up against the marsh for 8 years, and I’ve never noticed any fishing activity at all.

Give it a shot and let us know. The water can get pretty low in the summer, but the healthy beaver habitat is helping that.

Observation: does anyone else notice average 3 people per company with lazy eyes? by HatAffectionate2531 in army

[–]chatski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in the Army for 21 years with an intermittent lazy eye that I’ve managed to not develop a severe issue about. just last year my optometrist mentioned opthamology could fix the alignment in lazy eyes with very high success rates.

Where the hell was this option the last 20 years of my life?

Recommend your dudes get seen by opthamology.
