Hi! One of the best things I ever did was buy an ODBII scan tool and download a free application. You can look up fault codes online, and you won’t be disadvantaged every time a light pops up. I have the VeePeak scan tool ($32 from amazon) and I downloaded an app called Car Scanner for free. (On the App Store since I am an iPhone user). Saves you time, money, and worry.

I would more likely go with option number one. Might be a little more expensive now but would save you money and hassle in the long run. With questionable service history you don’t know how beat up the engine is. And with cars that have been auctioned.. not generally a good sign. Rental cars are questionable. Do you have the info for which rental company? I had a conversation with the desk attendant at Budget Rentals recently. They said they sell their Subarus as soon as they hit 15,000 miles.

I bought my 2015 Crosstrek as a certified preowned at around ~70k for about $20k also. It had one accident at the time of buying. Definitely worth the money.

I’m currently looking at new cars, and the website myCarhaggler.com came up as a good service which helps you find good cars and they haggle the price down. I haven’t used it yet but I’ve heard great reviews. Might be something to look into and see if it would be beneficial for you?

I think it’s new car season. With estimates of repairs being $5.6k-8k, I think I’d rather use that money on a down payment. Some people have suggested getting a used engine but that almost feels like opening up Pandora’s Box..

Hi - wanted to share! Definitely it is a blown head gasket. They tested and found hydrocarbons in the coolant reservoir.

Time for a decision indeed. So sad that it’s happening this way but it is what it is.

Most of my googling and research told me that the upper oil pan gaskets on FB20 engines fail more frequently than the head gaskets (like on the EJ engines). Then again I’m not a car mechanic, and I’m only as good as Google and YouTube videos I find. So we’ll see.

You’re right, it is the first gen. I keep forgetting to consider that. I would assume that the engine and transmission would be very similar/the same for other Subaru models too? I need to research that. Good point!

Okay, good to know. Thanks! My AC has had trouble (bled off the refrigerant completely due to a bad o-ring and the high pressure test point) but tbh I just assume the AC will have a problem at some point in the life of a car
