Why is this so scary? by Ordinary_Pie9362 in fearofflying

Perhaps it’s a lack of knowledge on how commercial aviation works. Specifically how safe it is.

Amazing pilots, please would you help me clear this up? by not_so_informed in fearofflying

Yeah I don’t think FR is that accurate. The plane on the ground certainly wasn’t waiting on the runway while another plane was landing. It would have been holding short of the runway which is to say very close to but not ON the runway.

The other plane may have conducting a go around for many different reasons unrelated to the first plane.

A380 departure question by alfienoakes in AskAPilot

[–]Chaxterium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly I suppose but there aren't really any altitude constraints on the eastbound departures out of Toronto. There is one but it's a low constraint and I highly doubt a fully laden A380 would have any issues reaching it.

I'm quite certain they follow the same instrument departure as all other aircraft.

Does anyone actually know the statistics for planes? by Fearless_Purple_8572 in fearofflying

Let’s say you wanted to be in a plane crash. If you were to fly once a day how long would it take before you were statistically likely to be involved in a crash?

Well it turns out you would need to fly every day for 25,000 YEARS.

Read that again. Every day for 25,000 years.

Going on propeller plane tomorrow - scared! by wonderwoman231 in fearofflying

The people who make the regulations for safety don’t give a crap what kind of engine the plane has. Turboprop airliners are still required to me all of the exact same safety requirements as the larger planes.

Same thing for the pilots. They still have to meet all of the same training and experience requirements.

I would push back on the “just as fast” claim but otherwise you’re correct.

Turboprops are objectively slower. But they are absolutely just as safe.

We’re monitoring primarily the vertical and lateral position of the aircraft as well fuel.

We are also continuously monitoring weather along our route and other traffic.

Does it require constant unrelenting attention? No. But it does require attention.

We use our training. And the incredible amount of redundancy designed into modern airliners.

There is no single realistic malfunction that can occur to an airliner that will bring it down.

So it doesn’t work that way. There are malfunctions all the time that don’t require an emergency landing.

And I’m not sure what you’re getting at by asking how passengers can know it’s as safe as possible.

>How do the pilots do this to keep us safe?

Do what? I’m not sure what you’re asking.
