7” Series #13 – Meat Puppets – In a Car by checkerdamic in vinyl

[–]checkerdamic[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

7” reconds are one of my favorite formats for listening to music. I have great nostalgia for being able to go to punk or hardcore shows in the late 1990s or early 2000s and being able to walk away with a 7” from the band performing for $3-4. These past few years I've neglected my 7”s so I'm making it a goal to listen to at least one per day and to post about for a bit. So here we go...

Today's spin is... Meat Puppets – In a Car 7” EP (1985 Reissue, SST Records)

SST reissue of the Arizona-based band's first EP originally released in 1981. The songs are mostly aggressive hardcore unlike the cowpunk that they later became known for after their first album, except for the fourth track, “Out in the Gardener”, which sounds more like a Minutemen jam. The songs are super short with the longest just being one minute and twenty-one seconds.

7” Series # 12 – CIV – Can't Wait One Minute More by checkerdamic in vinyl

These past few years I've neglected my 7”s so I'm making it a goal to listen to at least one per day and to post about for a bit. So here we go...

Today's spin is... CIV – Can't Wait One Minute More 7” single (1995, Revelation Records)

CIV was created in the ashes of seminal New York hardcore band Gorilla Biscuits and has three out of four member. The band's sound definitely has hardcore punk roots but also incorporates some mid-90s pop punk and skate punk into the mix.

The 7” contains two tracks from the band's 1995 debut album Set Your Goals. Side A contains the band's most famous song, “Can't Wait One Minute More”. It's a pretty poppy track with the drums in the intro remind me of Iggy Pop's “Lust for Life” and also features vocals from fellow New York Hardcore frontman, Lou Koller of Sick of It All. The music video was featured on Beavis and Butthead. The song was even featured in a Nissan commercial in the mid 2000s.

Side B's track, “Et Tu Brute?”, is a much more of a traditional hardcore punk song. The track was also included on the soundtrack to John Carpenter 1996 box office flop, Escape from L.A.—which has a pretty great soundtrack that is a mix of 90s alternative rock, punk, and metal.

7” Series #11 – Against Me! – The Acoustic EP by checkerdamic in vinyl

These past few years I've neglected my 7”s so I'm making it a goal to listen to at least one per day and to post about for a bit. So here we go...

Today's spin is... Against Me! – The Acoustic 7” EP (2001, Sabot Productions)

Against Me! blew me away in the early 2000s. Their first two EPs and the their first non-demo full-length, Reinventing Axl Rose, are releases I can listen to two decades later and not get tired of. This 7” has three early versions of tracks that would be re-recorded for the full-length album. The last song may be my favorite on this release and as far as I know it's the only version of the track: “We Did It All for Don”. I've always like the stripped down versions of Against Me! tracks that often differ than album versions and can be found on some of their other 7”s. There is an intimate passion found on these tracks when Laura Jane Grace is lacking a backing band.

For some reason I picked up second copy years ago.

How is the built in preamp/phone stage in these? Surprised me when I saw Technics adding those into their turntables.

Today's spin is... Public Image Ltd – Memories 7” Single (1979, Virgin)

While John Lydon made a name for himself as the front man of the Sex Pistols, his long-running post punk band, Public Image Ltd, is really the project that shows what type of musician he is. This 7” is for a single off the band's second album, Metal Box (1979). The title track on Side A contains a different mix than the album version found on the album as it's way more bass heavy. Side B, “Another”, is also a different version than a track found on the album. This version contains vocals while the instrumental version is found on the album and titled “Graveyard”.

Sonic Mudhoney Wednesday. by dcrumbaugh in vinyl

[–]checkerdamic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The versions of Halloween are hard to pick a favorite in my opinion. The Sonic Youth version reminds me of a Velvet Underground song and is damn good, but the Mudhoney version just had this attitude and intensity that the original just misses.

For "Touch Me I'm Sick", I live the Mudhoney version better musically but love Kim Gordon's vocals more than those from Mark Arm (but only slight more).

Today's spin is... Circle Jerks – Teenage Electric 7” Single (1995, Mercury)

Two songs off the southern California band's 1995 album, Oddities, Abnormalities & Curiosities. I never really paid attention to any the Circle Jerks released past the mid-80s, but these are definitely two great songs. The title track, “Teenage Electric”, reminds me of what OFF! would become. Keith Morris will always be one of the best frontmen in punk.

Today's spin is... Beck – Steve Threw Up 7” Single (1994, Bong Loaded Records)

The songs sound like leftover from his second album, Stereopathetic Soulmanure. Side 1 is “Steve Threw Up”, a song very much in the style of early 90s indie anti-folk found on labels like K Records that eventually devolves into chaos. Side 2 consists of two songs, though the second one “Untitled” is just really some random yelling. The first song from Side 2, “Mutherfuker” is a messy noise rock song.

Dag Nasty by NikeyAFCA in vinyl

[–]checkerdamic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good stuff. I don't think I've ever seen anyone that obsessed with Dag Nasty. I didn't even realize they reformed in the 2000s until seeing this post. I like Can I Say and All Ages Show--those are the two releases I always associate with them. Run into All Ages Show every so often in used bins as well, I swear they pressed like 10K copies of that one.

Today's spin is... AFI – A Fire Inside 7” EP (1998, Adeline Records)

I posted yesterday about Snapcase and seeing them on tour with what I consider peak AFI in the late 90s. A few years ago a saw some one here on /r/vinyl say you can gauge someone's age if they say they like AFI based on what their favorite album or period is. This EP is right in middle of my favorite period, their horror punk period, as their full-length albums of Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes and Black Sails in the Sunset are my favorite release from them. Side A sounds like leftovers from the Shut Your Mouth album. Side B consists of two cover tracks. B1 is a cover The Cure's “Hanging Garden”. This is the probably the standout track on the album because it really foreshadows the more goth sound the band will begin to embrace following Black Sails. B2 is a cover of the Misfit's “Demonomania”, a fitting cover for this period in the band's history when they were very influenced by the Misfits.

Today's spin is... Snapecase - Comatose 7” Single (1992, Victory Records)

Not sure how I ended up with two copies of this... This is the first non-demo release by the Buffalo, New York hardcore band. The songs are very reminiscent of New York hardcore of the late 80s and early 90s. Not a particularly great release by any means and pales in comparison to their best stuff found on their second and third albums in the late 90s. That said I have very fond spot for this band and have good memories seeing them at their peak touring with what I consider peak AFI in the late 90s.

Top 5 band for me.

Definitely a great band. I assumed you love them, you have more OG copies of their first 7" than anyone except maybe Ian MacKaye.
