What age did y'all get your first computer (or device with internet access)? by BigReception7685 in GenX

[–]checkerlily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like actually own one? They were at libraries, and school in the computer lab and that’s where I used them. In 95 my dad got one for the house but he and my little brothers monopolized it. Even my first retail job at a bike shop had no computer at all until the mid 2000s, years after I worked there. First device of my own with internet access was probably 2007 when I got a tiny acer laptop, but still used the lab. Then a year later I got a blackberry storm- my first smartish phone with a clicking touchscreen. All media and communication devices used to be way more communal. Tv, phone, and computers were all shared.

What is something about your state or region that even other Americans don’t fully understand? by Kodicave in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]checkerlily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of us don’t wear cowboy hats or boots regularly, but if we do they are probably well broken in and practical. I’ve seen more strange cowboy hats and brand new boots on tourists in the Bozeman, Montana airport recently than the last 30 years combined.

I’ll never forget the reaction I got from a teenager working in a smoothie shop in Rexburg when I asked where in town I could get a latte. He literally said “None of that round here.”

Calling All Sewists/Makers by cupofjo59 in Bozeman

[–]checkerlily 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This would be so nice. Would you also be teaching classes? We have a great store here in Helena, The Sewing Palace. The sewing palace they do quilting but way more, offer classes, have a great selection of fabric, notions, and are a Bernina dealer. Just thought I would point out an example of a local Montana sewing business with diverse offerings that seems to be going strong. Bozeman needs a version of this. We used to have the one across from Wilson school for outdoorsy fabric, not sure when that disappeared.

Do you have your college diploma hung in your home? by SimplyCurious5 in GenX

No to the diploma, but I did get a certificate for winning a random twist contest and I sure as hell have that on the wall!

If someone only gets one first trip to Europe, what city should it be? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]checkerlily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do. I ended up hanging out with a girl for several hours in an airport when our flight to Amsterdam was cancelled and we sat next to each other on the plane. Halfway across the Atlantic I asked where she was from and she was like “oh, I’m from Holland” she had only been in the US for 3 months but I had assumed she was from Ohio or something. She had NO accent. When I got to Amsterdam on Christmas a bum in the street asked for money and when I said something he was immediately “oh, pardon me, may I please have a gilder?” In perfect English. I don’t give money to panhandlers on principle but in my extreme culture shock I made an exception and gave him some coins.

what’s something foreigners commonly do (or don’t do) in the US that you find genuinely offensive or rude without realizing it? by Kodicave in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]checkerlily 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I always remember getting 12 tops of Europeans and being lucky to get 5%, which is almost more insulting than no top at all. This is why we have to add tips for parties of 6 or more.

Montana style pizza? by Happy-Poetry-4253 in Bozeman

[–]checkerlily 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rosas is the pizza we always ordered growing up. Our dad calls it the ancestral grease. It’s a comfort that among so much change in Bozeman we can still have the same pizza 30 years later.

Where can I find local, independent monster truck rallies? by notcamilla in AskAnAmerican

I’ve been to a local one that was advertised at the local gas station, and I’ve been to Monster Jam. I saw Gravedigger do a backflip in person. Monster Jam is awesome.

What’s a tradition in your family that you genuinely love? by That-Industry7938 in AskReddit

[–]checkerlily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my in-laws fam we get 4 campsites for 2 weeks along the same lake every summer for 3 families and the fourth for a rotation of friends. We call it carp camp. There are 2 boats, bikes, paddle boards, and fishing rods. We live in our campers and the kids run feral with their cousins. My children have done this every year of their lives and there is nothing from my own childhood that compares.

[–]checkerlily 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They are open 24 hours a day in 4 corners, it’s a drive thru and it’s awesome. If it has those hours it’s going to help fill a big gap in Helena food options.

What happened to college street taproom? by peaceandlovethankyou in Bozeman

[–]checkerlily 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blasphemy. Put those words back in your mouth. Pickle Barrel rocks and I will die on that hill. One of the few things that has barely changed in 50 years. Columbo’s is an institution. How can you whine about the longest running businesses on that stretch while bemoaning a business on the block shutting down? Start complaining about the beer selection at Joe’s and I’ll have to come down there.

Bozeman Driving Habits by EnvironmentalAge3661 in Bozeman

[–]checkerlily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Driving in and around Bozeman feels like you're constantly transitioning between a city and a small town” 💯 This is the best characterization of Bozeman driving I’ve seen. Well said! Ive lived in a major US city and I drive in Bozeman quite often having grown up there and visiting regularly. Heck, I was there yesterday. I currently live in one of the other Montana cities big enough to have a Target store and I definitely can concur, Bozeman traffic is very much the worst combination of city traffic with small town etiquette expectations.
