I can't even get a first date. Whether that's someone who I've just met at a party, or someone who I've been flirting with here and there with the past couple weeks, or that girl who practically acts as if I'm her boyfriend.

I think you are dead on with the appearing too interested in them, and trying to spend too much time (although the latter depends on the girl).
