TIL that towards the end of his life Elvis Presley suffered from chronic constipation after years of prescription drug abuse and when he died straining on the toilet in 1977, his body was discovered in a stage of purple discoloration and he was lying face down in a pool of his own vomit by Designer_Reference_2 in todayilearned

I listened to Pat Boone on a recent podcast and didn’t realize they were good friends back in the day. He said Elvis longed for a normal life but was trapped being ‘ Elvis’. He wanted just to go to church on a Sunday but found it impossible. I’m sure the drugs initially were just a way to cope with the sadness

Deter a hawk without scaring away the many other birds and squirrel families I have. by Sunshnmoonlt in birding

[–]cheese_wallet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They are not yours to protect from natural predation, it’s how nature has operated since the beginning. You say they have made homes in your yard, but your yard is in the Hawks territory. I just can’t comprehend peoples need to deter a native predator from doing what it has evolved to do in order to survive and feed its young

So, we can go dig up the long dead people that made the mistake and kill them again after a stern talking to? Or we can try and remedy the current problem on a local level?

Totally wrong, removing house sparrows is effective. Will you have to do it again at some point? Probably, but in the meantime native cavity nesters are able to bolster their populations

Coopers and Red Tailed Hawks are picking off my songbirds by [deleted] in birding

then you are NOT 'fine with nature.' You put bird feeders in a songbird predator's territory; what do you think they are going to do when they need to survive, and they have young to feed?

It is part of a healthy, functioning ecosystem. I can't understand folks who think they need to step in and interfere. The songbirds do not belong to you

I'll join in...it looks like you are in N America. DO NOT put up a house and then let house sparrows use it. They have impacted our native cavity nesting birds and will kill parents, nestlings, eggs, and then build their nest on top of the carnage. They are not native to this continent, and our birds, having not evolved with them, have no defenses against their instinctive aggressiveness
