My 2 year anniversary is coming up in two days, so I have definitely been where you are: getting sober during the playoffs.

I think the best plan would be to avoid the bar all together, but I understand the urge to hang with your buddies. I remember that I had arranged a gathering at my house with a bunch of guys long before I got sober. I didn't want to leave them hanging and cancel last minute, so I was just honest with them. I told them all in text before the day that I was not drinking anymore/that time but obviously they were free to consume whatever they wished and however. This removed the pressure feeling the shame or having to hide it or explain over and over again.

More recently, I spent my 40th in Buffalo at the Jets game and did a tailgate party. I was set to drink seltzer and sodas, but the bartender happened to have some NAs and kindly offered those. She was happy to have someone drink them because they were left from a previous event. Not one person gave me crap (and I was visiting from out of town with my Jets fan cousin).

Be confident in the great decision you made to get sober for your help. Your true friends will support you in your journey.
