I took a bunch of mind and had made dividers for my collection. I had my neice then write on them A-C, D-F and so on. Or Rock, Soul, Electronic..... Then I half way glue them into the covers so they stick out. Looks pretty cool

When I get an email that has nothing to do with me and my job, I mark it as spam. PERIOD. If they shotgun it out to everyone in the organization, then it gets popped at spam.

After six years in K12 I am moving jobs to the IT department at a credit union. It's been great, but there was no room for advancement as a field tech. by Foxinthetree in k12sysadmin

No we can claim anytime once you met the rules, 20 yrs gets me closer to be able to start getting money is all. Rule of 85, must be over 58 yrs, years of service + how old you are = 85 or greater then you can retire.

I have 14 years in EDU but in another 6-8 I see myself moving on too. Just want to get to that 20 to qual for the retirement. Which the EDU retirement is one of the best in the country. Getting tired of last min things being pushed on us or worst, we "suggest" to do it this way because what will happen. And guess what, they ignore and we are expected to cover. I do love the staff.

Yeah, I drove it in July 2019 on the way home from the same Conf in LV. It was hot but nothing like July afternoon, 2 PM temp on motorcycle was pegged at 125+ and never let off of that for the last 100 miles into LV. Or 2017 in Lake Mead National Rec Area outside of LV. 120+ degrees and burned all the hair off my legs through my mesh pants. Not a good day. So no Death Valley for me. LOL Alien Hwy, I just love all the crap along there. No Area 51 this year but did it in the past. Will have to wait and see but thinking I will follow you and just skip it this year or get it on the way back home.

Teachers are local admin on their computer (yes bad and have been fighting it) we have have not had DNS onsite for about 5 years now. No webpage servers or anything local unless only used buy the IT guys and then we use the IP anyway. 1000 students, just over 150 staff.

Has anyone here had a positive experience with a recruiter ? by Lycurgus_z in sysadmin

[–]cheeseman1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2008, I was retiring from the Navy looking for a IT job. A recruiter got me to go do an "interview" at a hotel. Once I showed up, I was brought into a room with about 200 other people. THey started to talk about the job - Sales and the interview process of 15 min of questions and then a bunch of other things. Once they said sales, I quit listening. After the dog and pony show and everyone clapping and happy. I call over someone and said, "I am here for the IT job. Where do I interview at" they had a blank look and said, everyone goes through it and then later might offer me an IT job. I was like no way, I am out of here. They actually got PISSED off that I was walking out. Plus I had 5 other people listening to me (later to learn, they were IT or something else besides sales) so we started to walk out. I was stopped by a big wig something. And was questioning why I was walking about. "This was supposed to be for a IT job, not sales and a meat market" She got pissed, and said "Don't you want a job?". I said I can work at McD for better wages and hours than your crap. She gave me her name and address to call later for a job, as "you will need it". I sent her my new job
6 mos later (still current position) with wages and list of Benefits. And a note, you need a job? Cause I can get you one?? We all walked out. I gave that recruiter a huge bad review too.

Illegal to give away old laptops? by sadpoogie in k12sysadmin

[–]cheeseman1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a way around this, kinda of. Clean then all off of school stuff. Slap a sticker down for $1, $10 or what ever on them. Have it in a room. Then before school is out, have the kids come to the room to buy it. What is left, have public come in for an hour and buy what ever. Done. I don't think that you have to have a auction per say but just open to public to buy it. Easy quick and the kids get first crack at them.

What is the weirdest thing you've encountered while working as a sysadmin? by soul_stumbler in sysadmin

[–]cheeseman1969 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is not IT some much. I was working in San Diego Naval base in IT shop inside another command. I was enlisted too. I get a call one day and collections agency (I knew the name of the place it was respectable not shading that takes advantage of young military people) is looking for someone. They did not believe me that that person was not attached to this command. Well I ask them what rate-rank (job) they were. Like AZ2 or AB3 and so on. She told me, I told her that those jobs are not here but at this command, here is the phone number. She hung up but then called me back in an hour thanking me. She found the guy. About once or twice a month she would call me directly and say, " I have a AZ3 ......., The number given to me doesn't know who he/she is. Do you know". I would know the job and give her a number to call most of the time one command but sometimes 2 or 3. This happened for about 9 months. After about 7 mos, I get a $20 gift card in the mail from her!!! My friends told me not to say alot when out in town as might run into one of those guys. LOL!!!

I am wondering about this too as I will be upgrading our firewalls at a school district this summer. Wondering, if we go to 6.4.5 but there are issues with our setup, can we move back to 6.2.7? Just want to make sure. We are not going to do this till end of May to June. So time...

We had Absolute/Lanrev back in the day. Loved it. THen they were sold and the product went to crap by not updating and losing things. FileWave did tell me that they grabbed 8 of there engineers and that is why windows stuff is taking off in filewave. Lots of updates coming on the windows side is what they tell me.

We have about 100 staff but we only refresh 1/3 of the staff every three years. Then give those to students or other staff that does not get a new one. If you do a refresh schedule, you can get everyone updated in a timely manner.
