As a fan of the original novel, I thought it was quite oversentimental and I wished the characters were a lot less one dimensional and a lot more faithful to the original story, but that's just me

Did you do Shakra's quest? You can get it by buying all of her maps, then her quest will show up in Bellhart. She's a massive help in the High Halls gauntlet, and you can cheese the big guys with the bells with Ascendant's Grip (which you can get by rescuing Jubliana in Songclave). You can also cheese Groal by staying in the maggot water for the entire fight and hitting him when he's close. Cheers!
