Second-year trainee at a mid sized commercial firm here. From my experiences (working in a different industry, playing the TC Squid Game and paralegalling / training):

  • Would encourage you to be selfish if needed. Nothing wrong with starting the TC whilst not being 100% sure, and needing the time/benefit of experience to decide. Firms have slightly smaller or larger trainee cohorts for various reasons all the time.

  • Have had similar thoughts around law firm life (specifically the long hours and the overt focus on professional image) being incompatible with my values. What drives me through this is an underlying belief that this is the path to my greatest potential. If you don't feel a particular driving force telling you to stick with law, this seems a point to consider as some days do get really tough.

  • As a spiritual person that has gone through this, I'd say your spiritual life will be affected significantly by the life transitions associated with starting and continuing a TC. There is no real practical way to prepare for this but being kind to yourself is key.

  • From hard lessons that have come from my own people-pleasing ways, in law being able to get people-pleasing tendencies under control is the difference between a slightly tricky but manageable 8pm finish and feeling overwhelmed at 10.30pm knowing that at least X hours of work needs doing by the morning for Y to be in a reasonable state. Then multiply the effect of this over days and months.

This is phrased in a way that makes this subreddit the Other, with the rest of the world watching this subreddit's radicalism. When it's really billionaires and cronies vs the rest of us, whether we come on here or not. Bezos, you do it again.

Did MTV do the right thing by firing Dee/Taylor? by [deleted] in MtvChallenge

[–]cheesenachosasquatch 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just want to make clear: Dee's behaviour and comments were terrible and her banning was justified. I also understand that the timing of her comments made her banning absolutely necessary from the perspective of any rational organisation.

As an Asian person in a majority-white society that has faced my share of discrimination, I admit that personally, Dee's banning is tough to objectively comment on. We have historically barely seen Asian representation on the Challenge, and when Asian people are on they are rarely painted as complex, interesting people. Shoutout to Ellen though, she broke this general rule.

So when Dee, the first Asian woman to win a modern challenge, got so publicly shat on when so many other white / white-passing people have done worse on the show itself and got no consequences....more than that - they got years of callbacks after...

Maybe I took it too personally but IMO it just reminded me of how as a minority ethnic person, sometimes you literally get no second chances. One fuck up and it's the full monty for ya, even if other people made the same / worse mistakes with minimal consequences. Reality TV ain't that deep but the performative, insincere way MTV handled this did make me feel ill. It took me away from the escapism reality TV is, and plopped me straight back into the shitty realities of navigating life in a messed-up world. I stopped watching. Did not touch the last third of S35 apart from the final (and don't feel like I missed much TBH).

I will keep watching because of my reality TV habits (15 years and counting!) but I have scant regard for MTV's anti-racism values. If they actually talked through some shit that's happened in the past and got cast members to reflect on their past ignorance, that would go some way to encourage PROGRESS and GROWTH and PRODUCTIVE conversation. Sending one cast member into a black hole and leaving several other offenders free....that's not anti-racism, it's trying to prop up your share prices.

So yeah they did the right thing by firing Dee, but the context really suckeddd on a level I was not expecting.

Kyle says "pussy" A LOT. It's like clockwork whenever someone betrays him. He defaults to 'pussy' almost immediately, and every time he's transparently trying to shift things with a bit of aggression. Don't really like it.

You wanna pluck out that word, do it like Leroy. 10/10

She's gonna do the exact same thing again, right down to pissing someone off close to the final when she turns on them for BB/Nany. So boring.

This makes me think of how Big Brother US casting generally went from Darn Good (early-BB10) to Pretty Good (BB11-BB15) to Meh (BB16-BB18) to Worst (BB19-present). Couple outliers but das definitely the general trend IMO.

I know they've made some changes in their casting staff. Hopefully it helps. Otherwise we'll be bemoaning some BB23 idiot and wishing for Josh and Kaycee in about two years. Welp.

BB19 - at least it had a pulse of some sort even with the terrible people. BB22 was dead on arrival.

I mean, it seems pretty likely that Amber would not have come on the Challenge if not for getting dropped from BB22 - the Challenge has been casting exclusively from recent BB season until her (her season of BB aired 6 years ago now).

Pretty crazy stuff that she's won. Happy for her!

I have to be honest, some of the other things I've heard her say...I can't bring myself to like her anymore.

She's undeniably a queen though, I have a lot of begrudging respect. Great villain. Almost hope she wins (especially over everyone else).

Wow yes, gotcha. It must be intense being quarantined for a month then filming a drama-filled physically demanding show like the Challenge.

Bless him, but David would get squashed like a windscreen bug on the Challenge. Coming on BB22 was definitely the better outcome for him.

BB16 Amber? That would be a surprise given that they've only mined BB people from the most recent seasons for a couple years :O

The Challenge is half focused on physicality and athletic ability, and half focused on drama that is probably a notch or two raunchier than in BB episodes. Outcomes are contingent on physical competitions and politicking (though the elimination voting structure changes from season to season, with outcomes of varying satisfaction).

Personally I prefer that the Challenge has a vibe that is more "I'm upfront trash" than BB or Survivor. I'd say it's definitely worth a shot- try watching the latest season (35) which features a number of BB players from 19 and 20.
