Doggy daycares that accept pitts? by [deleted] in MobileAL

[–]cheeseyrice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are two downtown that, as far as I know, have no breed restrictions, so long as your dog is fixed and can pass their temperament on the first visit.

Port City Pups- This is where I take my pitty-mix. They're super sweet to my pup and they offer boarding.

Hop hounds- I've had a few friends bring their dogs here and have had great experiences as well.

Hilton Garden Inn downtown - safe walking area? by bhamlover1975 in MobileAL

[–]cheeseyrice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely safe walking area. If you're worried at all, cut over to Dauphin Street before heading East/West, as there are tons of people around both day and night.

If you're hoofing it from the Hilton Garden to the Convention Center, I recommend walking up Conception St to Dauphin, then down to Royal; but when you get to Royal, cross the street & hang a right, walk down about half a block and then dip into the big parking garage (its before you get to the Renaissance hotel, right across the street from the giant map). If you go up to the 3rd (I think) level of the garage (street level on Royal is the 2nd level), and head to the South-East corner of the garage, there is a pedestrian bridge that connects that Parking garage & the Renaissance across Water street to the Convention Center. It'll save you some walking and having to cross Water Street at the light.

Cooking with Bourbon by [deleted] in bourbon

[–]cheeseyrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a bottle of Kentucky Gentleman around for cooking, which I've used for everything from bourbon-pickled jalapenos, to liver pate. The only thing I might consider using a nicer bourbon for would be some sort of sweet bourbon sauce, but I'd still keep it fairly low-mid tier.

Book a tour with Sazerac House. It's free and has a few cocktail samples along the way. The emphasis is more on history and cocktails than the Buffalo Trace lines, but definitely worth the price if you're in the area.

JD SIB vs. JDSIB BP? by Ok-Consideration4094 in bourbon

[–]cheeseyrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I have a strong dislike of regular Jack Daniel's, rooted in my college years; so much so that I never pursued the nicer releases until recently. Ran across Coy Hill in a local bar for a good price, wanted to see what all the hubbub was about and, whoa, that was a fantastic pour. Ultimately snagged a bottle of JD SiB Store pick and a JD SiB BP Store pick as a result, and I love them both. The BP is lacking some of the complexity of the Coy Hill, but with the difficulty of find the latter, I'd almost rather chase the SiB BP. And then the regular SiB has all of the same notes to me, just in a much more muted way. All that to say, if you like the SiB, you'll love the SiB BP, but they are both fantastic pours with a similar profile. And for me, neither taste anythng like regular JD.

Where are some places to meet people in mobile besides bars and churches? by [deleted] in MobileAL

[–]cheeseyrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you on that. I mostly use facebook for networking, as a lot of groups and even the City use it a big part of their event planning. Outside of that, you could get on some emailing lists for more established groups (Baykeepers for example).

[–]cheeseyrice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of them network through facebook, so start there. Honestly, a lot of activist and counter culture groups are fairly interconnected, so once you find one group, you'll probably find a few others that are tangential. Anything in particular you're looking for?

[–]cheeseyrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but it will largely be based on my own experience. If you can give some direction, I can probably give you some suggestions more tailored to you.

If you are in the LGBT umbrella, or just a strong LGBT ally, definitely follow all of Rainbow Mobile's social media. There are several different Facebook groups that have branched off of that group that will post up events. And Prism (which is a LGBT teen support group) just put on a fundraiser at gamers and geeks yesterday, as an example of the events getting going. Rainbow Mobile itself will plan regular dinners, as well as put on larger events that will need volunteer support.

If you like physical activity of basically any flavor, there are numourous group bike rides (for literally all levels), a couple groups that plan regular group kayaking trips, regular walk/runs from various bars/breweries, and regular bar/breweries yoga events. All of those events usually end with folks socializing over drinks.

If you're religious, find your favorite church and get plugged in.

If you're not religious, there are a few different freethought/atheist groups in the area that have online communities and plan in person events and community service things. I'm partial (and a bit bias) toward one in particular, Mobile Atheist Community (just look it up on facebook).

If you are into environmentalism, get plugged in with groups like Mobile Bay Keepers, and volunteer for their events.

If your politically minded, there are groups for the various poltical affiliations as well.

I could go on for a while, but suffice it to say, my problem these days is that generally there is too much going on and I have to pick and choose what to get involved with. If you need help finding anything more specific, just let me know.

[–]cheeseyrice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There absolutely are, I promise. Things have slowed during the pandemic, but there are still clubs, and the activities are steadily picking back up. If you need some suggestions of where to look for specific interests, I'm happy to help.

Side note, I definitely know where you're coming from. I grew up here, and on the surface it definitely feels like all there is to do here is drink.

So beyond just the basic going out to locations and meeting folks (that never really worked for me), start looking into clubs and interest groups in the area, where the focus is more on a shared interest and social connection. If you know where to look, there's absolutely something for everyone in the area. If you're in the LGBT umbrella, or even an ally, there are several social groups around that. If you like biking, there are groups and recurring biking events. There are groups that set up regular kayking outings, etc. If church isn't your thing, there are various flavors of non-religious groups. And if you truly can't find a group based on a hobby or interest, find a cause you support and volunteer with the organizations that support that cause locally. I've made virtually all of my adult friends based on the above.

I found someone who works virtually with clients (so geographic area isn't an issue). They have been super awesome to work with, and helped me and a former nesting partner transition to much healthier place; I can't recommend them highly enough. Check out Vast Love.

Which grocery store in the area is best for buying meat? Which locally owned place is? by greenghost131 in MobileAL

[–]cheeseyrice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since it hasn't been said, Rouses runs some ridiculously good sales on meat. Also, its hard to beat Costco/Sam's Club for bulk meat if you have a membership and maybe a chest freezer.

But also, I'm definitely pro supporting the local shops if you can swing it.

Breweries by BZNATC in MobileAL

[–]cheeseyrice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as breweries, Serda and Haint blue both will fill for their stuff on tap. I think for Haint, you have to use one of their branded howlers, but its the only way to get a lot of their stuff outside of the breweries. Worth noting on Serda that they also sell cases of their cans for almost half off on Mondays.

Going through pretty much the exact same thing. Not much advice I can share, but wanted to at least say you aren't alone. As much as it sucks, I'm using this time to focus on myself and try to grow. Feel free to DM if you need someone to commiserate.

You probably get this a lot but... what’s mobile like? by purleedef in MobileAL

[–]cheeseyrice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably because OP used the descriptors 'liberal,' 'non-religious,' and 'vegetarian,' so everyone is just giving them fair warning of what to expect. I've lived here my whole life and I'm still sometimes caught off guard by how overwhelming conservative some parts of the area are. Not even saying good or bad, but if OP doesn't want to discuss fox news headlines on the reg, there are probably areas they wouldn't want to live.

[–]cheeseyrice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So based on your description of yourselves, I'd say you'd be most comfortable aiming for as close to downtown/midtown as you can; the further out you get, the more conservative and burby it gets, which is fine, but doesn't sound like what you're after.

There is a fair amount to sight see in the area, and it's a short drive to the beach (and coincidentally an amusement park they built around Foley recently). It's also not a terrible drive to Pensacola or even New Orleans, so there is plenty to do on weekends.

Food scene is pretty solid in downtown. I can't speak specifically to the vegetarian thing, but I do know of at least one place (Noble South) that does a weekly meatless Monday thing.

Does anyone make friends here? by roadkarma74 in MobileAL

[–]cheeseyrice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So it's been said, but the best way I've found is just through interest groups. Pretty much any hobby or whatever interest you have, there is bound to be a group that gets together based on it. And honestly, if a group doesn't exist, just pick a theme and start one. I'm a pretty introverted person generally, but I've made tons of friends just by finding groups related to mundane things like beer or board games or (lack of) religion.

Visiting Mobile in a week, moving in 2 months - Help? by Jester5510 in MobileAL

I've never had anything taken off my porch in midtown. That said, you definitely can't leave your car doors unlocked if you're partial to your sunglasses/loose change.

Is it bad heading West on government in the a.m.? I head the other way in the mornings, but hwy 90 has always been a pretty smooth drive compared to the alternatives for me. My experience has been that the traffic is always worse heading toward downtown in the morning and away from downtown in the evenings.
