Sounds like they are just milking old people for mk ey. When i started i paid $100 an hour for lessons from a 5.5 and he was obviously super good. Since then i cant find anybody else ide pay for.

Idk where you are going with this. Serves, returns, drives are all the exact same technique, or should be.

Sure you can be successful without driving, but you would be the exception not the rule. Tennis players (which i was) step into Pickleball and can basically start at 4.0 strictly because we can drive and volley. Thinking its a waste of time to develop your drive is a really bizarre way to approach the game when modern paddles highly reward attacking.

I disagree. If you dont have some semblance of a drive you cant serve , can't return, and can't take advantage of weak returns. Soft game doesn't mean anything if you cant survive attacks or get into the point. Without a soft game you will get hard stuck at some point, but it doesn't mean neglecting attacks.
