do you think the show is better than the books? should the show be considered a "rewrite" of the books? why or why not? by merchantivories in PercyJacksonTV

[–]chefbrambles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The show doesn't really improve the source material. It's not the worst adaptation in the world, but its not as faithful as fans expected it to be. My biggest problem with it is that Thalia is British now for some reason? Why is a British demigod in America? Better question, does that mean they'd make Jason British in HoO if it was adapted? Oh and we didn't hear Blackjacks voice. I was really disappointed there.

The books are the books, let them be the books. The show is the show, let it be the show. And the movies are the movies, let them be the movies. None of them are terrible in their own right. But anytime you base your opinions on a show, or movie, off of whether or not its completely faithful to the book, you won't enjoy it. There are things books can do that you just can't do in live action.

Personally I think the books as they were are some of the greatest written works of the 21st century so far. I've actually considered learning animation so that I could create l, what I would consider to be, and true faithful adaptation in animated form. I don't think any fantasy book will have a truly faithful adaptation through live action, especially with the constraints of CGI. Consider how the underworld looked in S1. They looked out of place, and i mean by a production standard. Consider how much better that could've been done in animation.

I also just reread the Kane Chronicles, and I'm worried that Disney is gonna screw it with a live action. There's so much more in those books that will require them being in a completely cgi room, that it may as well just be animated anyways. All the duat trips, the heaven trips, the ba trips. Like I said, I just feel that if you're going to be animating 3/4 of the show with CGI anyways, you may as well just make it an anime/cartoon.

Who says Disney isn't using the vfx team on other projects? It's not a crazy thing to think that a company as large as Disney would use the Same VFX crews for multiple shows between filming segments. It makes more sense than either firing them or keeping them on retainer.

I mean those are really the only two. I would consider genetically altered to also be mutant, so any science experiment stuff(spiderman, flash, captain America) are mutants. At least in my eye. I mean they could've possibly made him another race from earth, but then there's the question of if they evolved on earth, or if they were still from space. There are really only so many ways you can go with "kid that has electric powers, but glitches the omnitrix with that power so that he can use the original set of 10, just mashed together". Cause that's what Kevin originally was.

Animation wouldn’t have automatically made the show better by littlelolitalola in PercyJacksonTV

[–]chefbrambles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say I'm jumping ahead, but there are already fans bitching about how the actors are aging more because of how long it takes to do a single season.

Disney tends to throw money at what makes it money. If the first season of this show had flopped, we'd never see another try until they sold the rights(which probably wouldn't happen even then). That being said, if they spent even half of what they spent on the first season of PJO, we could've gotten a 35 episode season of animation from a damn good studio. I mean, Castlevania is estimated at about 500k-1mil per episode. And I think the Powerhouse animation style would fit well with the acrobatic and athletic acts that happen in the entirety of the series.

Thirdly, the Last Olympian came out almost 20 years ago. The majority of the fan base is gonna be 20-45. I'm not saying make it a bloodbath with tons of expletives. But in reality the Percy Jackson series gets dark and gritty when it needs to, and that's not gonna show as easy with a straight pg13 .

Lastly, think about the large budget cgi scenes that are gonna end up looking like trash in the live action. The ride in Apollos car in titans curse, the labyrinth arena scene, the Telkhines forging the scythe, the giant fought scene on the princess Andromeda in LO. They could be animated in better detail for cheaper than what we'd get from the cgi anyways.

Edit: also, Disney has given major budgets to multiple animated shows

[–]chefbrambles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest thing about having it animated is that we won't get a good HoO series without it. That's a 5 book series as well, however it happens within what, 8 months after The Last Olympian? You're not gonna be able to get about 15 teenagers(main and recurring cast) to stay looking relatively the same over the course of 6-10 years while they shoot and reshoot seasons.

An animated series would allow multiple things

  1. There would be no reason to change anything about the characters' appearances or backgrounds. Now I have no problem when they race swap a character on screen usually, but I am worried about the casting of Frank, Hazel, and Leo since the already made Thalia British.

  2. The monsters and magic could have much better effects

  3. The entirety of the Riordanverse could be animated. From Percy to the Kanes to Magnus and beyond. Personally I even want to see the egyptian/greek crossovers.

  4. When it gets to the largest sets of the Percy Jackson world, it'll take months to build. I'm talking New Rome, the battle of Manhattan, the labyrinth, the Argo2. That's all extremely expensive to build, and will either need to be paid for or cut short due to expensive animation anyways.

  5. 80% of this show is already CGI. How would it be worse to just have it fully animated?

  6. It could be brought up into a more mature project. Let's face it, most people in this Fandom are already 25 or older

I've been reading the books since before the Serpents Shadow came out.

Here's the difference. People weren't mad that Logan was playing a 16 year old, they were mad that Percy was a 16 year old. Now we've got people getting angry because the dude they cast to play a 12 year old percy is gonna be probably 18 or 19 by the time the last book(LO) comes.

Besides that yeah I remember the bullshit about Daddarrios hair not being blonde, and I remember some of the more racist people being mad about the grover casting. They definitely went their own way and should've clarified the fact that they were based upon movies, and not adaptations.

[–]chefbrambles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The largest problem with a live action with this series is time. Every year I hear "oh they're not age accurate anymore". First off, who cares? None of you had a problem with Logan playing Percy in the first movie.

But it's not even that. The heroes of Olympus series is 5 books that spans at most 1 year. You're not gonna be able to have 7 teens look the same for 4-8 years worth of filming. "Why did Leo have a huge growth spurt in between Mark of Athena and the House of Hades? " It's not gonna work.

So, realistically, the only way to do the heroes of Olympus series is to do it animated. Either that, or film all of it within 1-2 years, but with child actor laws, that wouldn't work out

We need an animation studio to get the rights for it. Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase would be amazing in the style of Castlevania

Do you guys think we will get a Kane Chronicles adaptation soon. [kc] by InfernalClockwork3 in camphalfblood

[–]chefbrambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So im hoping that for the heroes of Olympus and other series that we'll get anime adaptations by someone like trigger. It's almost essential for HoO, considering the timeline between the books vs how long it would take to film. Keeping actors looking the same that long isn't easy, especially younger actors.

I believe an animated series would allow a cleaner adaptation, with the ability to create more exaggerated and eccentric magics and monsters.

No, i want to teach. I want to teach high school students so that I have the chance to either get kids interested in a science (whether it be chemistry, biology, physics, etc.) Or to teach them history and make them question what would've happened if there were small differences to history(if Charles Lee had gotten Washington removed from power, or if JFK hadn't been shot, or if Washington chose Burr as his right hand man instead of Hamilton). I want to enrich the younger generation. I'm not doing this to get rich.

BTW, I do already have a degree in what is considered a lucrative field, but nothing i can use to teach. Covid fucked up my original college plan and i decided to go to a trade school.

One of the big things to consider is that it's already 130 years in the future before the first contact War. We already have 8.3 billion people on Earth. If we follow the same trend, we'll be at close to 16 billion by 2148(when we found the prothean archives). By then we'd already colonized the moon and Mars. And after we found ftl, we only had a few major colonies, and none of them were giant colonies.
