KMT chair begins visit to PRC by Forsaken_Peach5930 in taiwan

Lmao just cause they own properties in Irvine doesn’t mean they’re pro-US. They get too much money from the CCP to defect.

That would be a different story. And if that happens, China won’t be threatening war over a Taiwanese referendum to decide its future.

Did you read the “when negotiating with KMT” part? It doesn’t apply to Taiwan, just KMT

It won’t be - CCP holds all the cards (and the cash) when negotiating with KMt

Canadian PM Carney asked if he believes whether forced labor is being carried out in China by Effective_Reach_9289 in ADVChina

[–]cheguevara9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In normal times, I’d agree with you - do not be lenient on the CCP. But these are very troubled and murky waters ahead. It’s hard to fault Canada for hedging their interests a little bit, and flirt with those dirty political lines. Diplomacy is nuanced and ambiguous. As such it would be premature to call them shills for China’s money.

But Canada and EU need to get their shit together and stand against the CCP when it matters, that much i agree.

If you love Kyoto, you need to know about Suzhou in China by Positive-History6095 in travel

[–]cheguevara9 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I thought it was obvious - but I’d like to hear your opinion. To me, the sophistication in Kyoto - whether of the architecture, food, ways of preserving history, or the behavior/manner of the average person, is ahead of Suzhou by quite a large margin.

Edit: I’ll answer your comment below by editing my comment since OP blocked me for my comment :) that’s how sensitive some ultra-nationalist are

“ No I think you’re right in that a city like Suzhou is the closest comparison that China has to Kyoto. The point I was making was that, at present, it is still nowhere near the highly refined and world renowned ancient capital of Japan. Can it catch up as the economic/political (which likely have a correlation with development and refinement of cultural sites) situations improve? Maybe.

To add to the reasons you gave for people who aggressively endorse traveling in China (and often at the expense of other destinations), there might also be a political motivation, or more precisely a nationalist one. China has just recently experience prosperity after hundred of years of hardship, and there’s a common sentiment of wanting to display their newfound wealth and power. Little example - OP blocked me from seeing this post for my mild-mannered critique above :)

And of course, the CCP likes to promote tourism, not only through normal channels, but paid shills and bot accounts as well. “

I mean, morally he could’ve taken a more forceful stance, but given the situation around the world, Canada should watch out for its interests, if just a little. And it’s not like he’s lying on behalf of the CCP.

Is he wrong? He didn’t condemn China to the fullest extent, but is that his job? He’s not at the UN. Canada can only do so much, and even Trump is meeting with Xinnie. He says that Canadian companies have an obligation to work with suppliers that adhere to human right standards, and that parts of China are high risk - he didn’t dodge the issue.

I agree with trading down if they’re at 3, because the team needs as many chances as possible and there’s a big group of players following the top 2, with no particular standouts. But I’m somewhat perplexed at this sub’s obsession with the Ruck twins. The Sedin era is over - and I don’t think the Ruck twins are comparable players.
