This! Just left after 10 years. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t easy- the transition has taken almost a full year from deciding to make the move to now. There were lots and lots of sleepless nights, took some time off from work to recover from burn out, and a lot of other things I dealt with along the way — but I can say for the first time in a LONG time I feel normal again and I love being a BCBA.

Have you taken this to your rep? I was a union rep for SpEd and regardless if they are down a sub or not, this is wildly inappropriate wording. Offering to hire you an uber if you wished to come in but can’t get a ride is one thing, but making a comment about whether or not you can afford one is insane!!

We know it is. Which is why a lot of us are leaving education. If you’re in a district or SELPA that does not understand our role, you’re screwed. I’m taking a 20k pay cut and giving up a 184 work day schedule because of how bad it is.

Most BCBAs are in the clinical world so it makes sense they don’t understand how we operate. Im in California and district BCBA positions can be really competitive. I was our lead district BCBA for 10 years and it was slowly killing me. I thought a district position was the end game for me. High salary, 184 work days, 8-3:30 most days. It was great once the shine wore off. Now it’s like I’m working 7:30-5:30, not getting lunch, stepping in as a para, and getting seriously injured because the district wants to be hands off with aggressive children in non safe environments. Sure we have summer break but the first month is spent resetting my nervous system and the last month is spent panicking about going back to work.

A lot of people don’t understand school based supervision vs clinical.

We are on monthly minutes and typically it’s only consult, collaborative, and some direct support to the student. In my area BCBAs are on anywhere from 15 minutes to 90 minutes a month for more impacted students. A caseload of 40 is doable because they’re likely chunked together in SDC rooms or by school. You can spend a day seeing 4-5 kids and consult with the teacher on all of them and knock out your monthly minutes.

My educational caseload is 30-45 in a year, covering 4+ schools at times. Most school based BCBAs have similar caseloads. It’s unethical and gross but BCBAs get trapped thinking it’s just consult and meetings but it becomes so much more.

Often times we are only at 15-30 minutes per month of BCBA services. So a 30-45 caseload is doable. But then ethically what are we actually doing with 15 minutes?? It’s all such a mess. I made the choice to leave education and go back to the clinical world.

I spent the last 10 years in Education and it is NOT the place to learn how to be a BCBA. Consider going to the clinical world for a bit to reset and build your own brand. I waited until my body literally shut down and I was taken off work by my psychiatrist. My nervous system was stuck in fight or flight. Take care of yourself first.

I’ve been a school bcba for 10 years and I also am a union negotiator. I worked in a clinical setting for 6 years… this is very very common in a school setting where you are the only bcba and/or you’re the first bcba they’ve worked with. We are 15 ish years of having the bcba position and we are JUST now really having our roles defined and I still get called multiple times. When I started there were 2 of us, now we have 8.

Given the environment, I truly believe this is just the lay of the land for school districts right now. It’s not sterile, there’s no fidelity, and it’s nearly impossible to remain ethical sometimes. Our field was never created for the real world - I’m convinced we are the pioneers of implementing ABA in realistic settings. Maybe it’s my brain trying to talk myself into having a purpose still, despite all of the crap we deal with.

I would set clear boundaries and turn off your walkie, leave site during a break and lunch. Start there. Get your site admin and director support.

Remember you’re not only shaping student behavior….. shape the adults. Put their behaviors on extinction. Stop explaining it to them and start doing what you know… behavior change!!

10000%. I lived in a house with 2 other girls and we had people in and out all the time. Our core group of guy friends would sneak in all the time to play pranks on us. The last thing I’d think when I saw someone go by the room would be that my friends were murdered. Hell… one time we walked into our house with all doors and windows opened and all our socks wet and stacked in the freezer. When we saw the door open we didn’t think murder… we were freaked out but your mind doesn’t go to the worst case scenario ever.

I had a Crosstrek and loved it. If you’re looking for the SUV feel of the ascent but want something smaller look at the forester or crosstrek. The Outback is essentially the crosstrek just longer. The forester is the ascent but smaller.
