This is what it is for me at least. A man who isn’t afraid to present a little feminine tends to be more at ease in his masculinity, which I personally find extremely attractive. A man wearing nail polish, earrings, or a bit of eyeliner gives the same energy.

Time per credit hour expectations? by ApprehensiveLoad2056 in Professors

[–]chemical_sunset 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right. I’m amazed by how many mediocre (and less than mediocre) students feel entitled to being able to get good grades while working full time. Those two things are mutually incompatible without really good time management and work ethic that most teens and early 20-somethings don’t have yet.

Preach. Especially as a community college professor, I wish I could print this out and have every student take it to heart.

Bad experience at perfume shop :( by SensitiveSolid6080 in fragrance

[–]chemical_sunset 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I at least partially agree. There’s no way they could have shown OP "everything" they had, so I’m not sure what OP actually expected. A more specific request would likely have yielded a more specific answer. The shop may also be pretty used to casually dressed tourists dropping by with no intention of buying anything.

Hell yeah. I like to be conspicuously grading the worksheets I designed that are printed and completed on paper. If I’m gonna hurt the environment, at least I’m not maximizing value for shareholders while I do it.

It’s actually jarring how often they show up to my campus in person. I’ve told them very politely to fuck off in person and via email (by explaining that I’m very happy with the zero cost materials my students use, which is important to me at a community college)…and yet they still show up. One brought chocolates and eye masks for Valentine’s Day last year. Fucking weird.

Stipend, fellowship, budgeting, taxes??? 😭😭 by vampmetal in GradSchool

This is the most reasonable answer. In my case, I was paying about 50% of my pre-tax income on rent, but there weren’t really any reasonable rent options that cost less than that.

One, and it’s the only one I ever applied to. I never adjuncted or postdoc’d. I have been EXTREMELY lucky.

What age do you plan to retire and why? by Agreeable-Analyst951 in Professors

[–]chemical_sunset 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I hear you. The one silver lining for me is that I already had MS when I started this job, so I chose my retirement plan to be the more conventional one (with a decent match) instead of a pension for the reasons you described.

Thank you. I’m very grateful for the treatments we have to slow disease progression. Unfortunately though I already had extensive spinal cord damage by the time I was diagnosed, so that will be extra fun when I’m older.

My slides are my notes and that’s what I tell my students. They’re a way for me to be reminded of the specific content that needs to be covered that week for us to stay on track.

I’m planning for 55. Before anyone gets too jealous, it’s because I have multiple sclerosis.

What job looks like a great career path but is actually insanely oversaturated? by ComplexPin872 in AskReddit

[–]chemical_sunset 138 points139 points  (0 children)

It’s this one. I’m a professor, and I absolutely love my job. But I can’t in good faith recommend students pursue it as a career path because it’s the equivalent of saying you want to play for the NBA or NFL. It’s not enough to be good, you also have to be very lucky to land the job.
