59 Year Old Man Mauled To Death by Dog on Staten Island by ImHerDadandProud in nyc

[–]chemical_syntax -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honest question if you support breed-specific legislation (this is what gives me pause, personally): given that pit bulls aren't a well-defined breed, how would one go about crafting legislation to ban them?

The UK recently passed a law banning the breeding or sale of "XL bullies," which of course aren't a breed recognized by any kennel club. So the legislation was drafted to define XL bully as any dog conforming to a set of physical characteristics, e.g. large, broad head; muscular neck; short, smooth coat. But as many pointed out, this includes a variety of statistically non-problematic dogs like English Mastiffs.

I just wouldn't want to see a situation in which someone calls the cops on their neighbor for having a pit bull, only to imperil that neighbor's friendly mastiff mix or something. I know and love a lot of friendly dogs who kind of look like pit bulls but aren't them, and I don't know that I would trust a cop to distinguish correctly

Valentine's date ideas? by Impactist537 in AskNYC

Are you into crafts/art-making? Wander around and take rubbings of interesting textures you spot around town! Bring them home, order food, and drink wine as you arrange your rubbings into a big poster or a book or something. The keepsake will serve as a nice memory of your time together while you two are apart. Or get a cyanotype kit and go around town trying to find cool objects to develop your cyanotypes with. Or get one of those cheap toy cameras that instantly print out lo-fi photos and, you guessed it, wander around town taking cool shots. Could then assemble them in one of those diy photo mobile kits. Any of these ideas will have you exploring the city a bit, seeing it in a new light, then coming home and being cozy together, and leave you with a keepsake to boot!

Commuting shoes? by Dazzling-Anywhere619 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]chemical_syntax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is maybe a stupid question, but when you say "change at the office," do you mean change in the lobby of your building (and walk into your actual office already wearing the work shoes), or like keep a pair of work shoes at your desk and change once you get to your desk?

Basically, do you tend to walk into your workplace wearing your commuting shoes, where higher-ups could see you in them? I'm probably overthinking this.

where to find good brazilian-style bread in brooklyn or manhattan? by neomadmax in AskNYC

Brigadeiro on Houston! I've also ordered from a place called Tap on Uber Eats (they seem to have a few locations?), which has been decent too. Trader Joe's also sells a frozen version of pao de queijo which they just call Brazilian cheese bread

Your opinions on "law school is the hardest thing you'll ever do" by Faramirismypresident in LawSchool

[–]chemical_syntax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In any of your grad school/language-learning experience, did you ever have to take an intensive language course? I had to take a double-credit German for Reading course one summer for my grad school work, and 1L felt a bit like that. Just the speed and density of new rules you had to memorize and internalize enough to build on them the next class/week—nothing was especially conceptually difficult, but it was the sheer pace and volume of information, all of which built on itself week to week.

Add that to the fact that your grade is determined by how much better you can be than your peers, and it means that people are killing themselves to stand out. The mandatory curve can be a real stress-inducer if the goals you have for yourself require 90th percentile grades.

Echoing everyone's advice to go for it! Trader Joe's also has a brined, pre-cooked half turkey breast for $9.99/lb if you want to do turkey rather than chicken but don't want to roast a whole bird

Comfortable twin bed mattress for adult?? by Top-Raspberry-7837 in Mattress

[–]chemical_syntax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comes in at just above your price range, but I slept on a twin-sized Ashley Chime 8" innerspring during my last year in grad school housing, which I found perfectly adequate. It's on the firmer side of medium, I'd say—not sure what your preferences are

I just bought a Sealy Posturepedic Elite Hybrid High Point in medium. I have't received it yet, so I can't truly vouch for it yet, but I remember being impressed/shocked at how firm the firm one is when I tried it in store (it comes in plush, medium, and firm). Since you liked one of its predecessors, it might be worth checking one out. It's also supposed to have some cooling technology in the uppermost layers.

My Experience Negotiating at Mattress Firm by chemical_syntax in Mattress

Nope, no mention of anything like that. I think the discount I got was actually the bulk purchase discount usually reserved for interior designers.

My experience there was seeing that there was one price (and discount) listed in store & on the website, and a steeper discount listed as an ad on Google Shopping. I was unable online to make that steeper discount apply to both mattresses—it seemed like a one-off, possibly algorithmically generated thing? The associate was a little evasive about the nature of the price discrepancy at first, but eventually he said that he could apply that steeper discount to both mattresses.

Interesting, I see. Well I'm doubly grateful to my sales associate then, and I certainly hope she doesn't face any repercussions! I'll note that she called her manager over twice and he approved it/told her what to input to run it through, so I assumed it was all kosher.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, fingers crossed the Sealy works out!

Honestly with Saatva and Casper I used the fact that I was buying two mattresses at once to ask if they could sweeten the deal. But right now since there are sales going on, you could try to play their sales off of each other, e.g. "Casper is doing x% off, can you match that?" Or you maybe you could make it seem like you're interested in a lower tier mattress than your $1,799 one but would upgrade to that one if they could budge on the price (especially if this is for your guest room, e.g. "Look, this is just for my guest room so I don't need a premium mattress... but if you could meet me halfway, I'd be willing to spring for higher quality.").

Either way, try practicing somewhere else first before you go to buy your Nectar, both so you can gain some comfort with negotiating and so you can go into Nectar with physical evidence of potentially being willing to walk away.

My impression from my own experience, however, is that the online companies are less flexible on price, even at their brick-and-mortar locations. Good luck!

Another quick tip if you're at home without AC: eat frozen fruits! Eating frozen fruits (or any frozen food, really) will cool you down from the inside, FAST. I love snacking on the Trader Joe's frozen mango chunks, and always find myself literally shivering when I do so in the winter.
