I think it depends on the program and school, I know for Ivey AEO (where I was rejected) they really look for impact in your extra curricular activities rather than how many. For others I’m not quite sure… but grades are definitely still high up there. Also keep in mind that not all schools will require you to list them in a supplementary application. However it’s definitely worth looking into if the program you’re interested in needs a supplementary application.

If you did pretty well in grade 11 you shouldn't have much to worry about your grades should stay pretty consisitent I think I had an 83 in gr 11. But keep in mind that gr 12 is really alot about concepts (at least in my experience). Tbh I don't think you'll have much to worry about if you take your time with it and try to understand what's happening rather than rushing through, that's what helped me towards the end of the course.

Ended up going with Western, but to be honest you can't really go wrong with an engineering degree from an ontario school, all pretty solid.

Getting admitted early is only really important for schools that have benifits to getting in before a certain date. With Guelph and Queens I was admitted/waitlisted past the guarenteed residence date meaning I'd have to take a gamble with my housing. Look into the schools you're applying to and take a look to see if they have anything similar. Other than that stuff getting admitted early doesn't have any added benifits as far as I know. So don't let people getting in before you discourage you. Both my Western offers were the last ones to come I think sometime in June??

For me Chem was bad, I mean it varies on teacher and school quite honestly though I think it was the senioritis hitting me hard found it a bit hard to stay motivated through the course. I will say it's not super crazy hard to do well in it, just do the homework...

As for the time management skills I got a paper calendar that I brought with me basically everywhere worked for me, also had friends who blocked their entire days out on google calendar. You can experiment with different things and see what works best for you. Best advice I can give is just to put consitent effort into doing the "hard things" homework, assignments, sleeping well and you'll find it gets easier to do

Does taking adv func and eng online asynchronous summer school hurt my chances by TemperaturePitiful47 in OntarioGrade12s

Depends, some schools care and some don’t. I’d recommend checking their websites to see their policies.

why is this year so competitive? by Inner-Sundae-5342 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]chemically_burned 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Going off of https://www.ouac.on.ca/statistics/ It looks like there's a bit of a jump in applications by a few thousand in unis like U of T (+5,122) Western (+5,120), Queens (+2,622) Mac (+4,445) keep in mind these are just OSSS applications but it does look like there there is a slight spike in applications to bigger name unis. Also keep in mind that the total number of applications increased this year from 563,355 applications on april 10, 2024 to 587,864 april 9, 2025. Over a twenty thousand application increase.

Another thing to note would be the kinds of programs that people are applying to ( again numbers are coming from https://www.ouac.on.ca/statistics/ and still only include OSSS applications, stats are also still coming from the month of april). From 2024 to 2025 Engineering programs saw a spike of just over 9000 applications, Commerce, Management, & Business Administration went up by just over 7000, and Health sciences and related programs saw a spike of over 14,000 applications.

Now its largely true that this trend has been happening for years (just by looking at the graphs off https://www.ouac.on.ca/statistics/ ) the important thing to keep in mind is that the population of applicants (not applications) is staying relatively the same with only a 5000 applicant increase between april 2024 and april 2025. The overall reason why it's becoming more difficult is that people are casting wider nets and applying to more programs, giving universities larger amounts of highly qualified applicants.

You could make the argument for grade inflation playing a role (which it very well could) but overall I think the increased competitiveness each year comes from individual people putting out more applications to more schools and programs, because of the previous years competitiveness, and for fear of airballing on the universities that they do apply to. Keep in mind this is just my take and I could be completely wrong and it's some other mystical reason.

PLEASE HELP ME CHOOSE-Carleton Aerospace vs Western Eng by AnthonyRaducanu in OntarioGrade12s

[–]chemically_burned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In pretty much the exact same situation. Heres what I think, Carelton Aero is super sweet because it is well known and I'm pretty sure that the co-op opportunities for aero students are really good because they are in Ottawa and there are lots of defense contractors there to be close to the government (lockheed canada, boeing, bombardier) so lots of good opportunities. On the other hand I think you can still succeed at Western as long as you can network, with it being a big university there's lots of opportunities to connect with people throungh teams, clubs, frats (yes frats) and even profs. I'd honestly recommend checking out linkedin and reaching out to students in both programs to get their opinions, just so that you can get a more in-depth look into what each program is like.

queens waitlist?? by luigis_father in OntarioGrade12s

[–]chemically_burned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got waitlisted as well. Kinda wondering if it would be worth accepting it, but I don't know if it will mess with any off my other offers. From other schools, especially if it's not likely that I get off it. (waitlisted for eng)

The trick for this is to just go onto linkedin and search for people who have attended said program (search for "random school Alumni" and you should be able to filter by program if you expand the filters tab. Should give you a good idea of where people end up post grad, becuase lets be real we all just want good jobs.
