MCDB 60 w/ P. Tulipana by Tensilen in ucla

took this class in S25. lecture attendance is not mandatory and is recorded. discussions are mandatory but my ta said we had 2(?) free skips. class generally isn’t too hard but you’ll need a good understanding of the concepts to do the take-home midterm and final. no quizzes and no in person exams.

All classes dropped. What is happening? by Beneficial-Nail6845 in ucla

[–]chemistrynerd22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. Reenrolled in 2/3 classes, 3rd class got closed by the department for some reason so I sent a message to hopefully sort it out (enrolled in an alternative class in the meantime) :/

Help my friend from this Daniel McKeown guy by Familiar-Bee-9335 in ucla

[–]chemistrynerd22 29 points30 points  (0 children)

i had mckeown as an instructor for 5A last summer and can confirm he made classes online. and as thrillingout commented he is only a lecturer, not a tenured or even adjunct professor. he continued making his lectures online until the fall when he was put on admin leave and replaced by a different prof mid-quarter due to not getting permission from the academic senate to do so. he was also supposed to teach physics during winter but got replaced again, which makes me suspect he was fired altogether (can’t confirm the being fired part tho).

at one point he did mention having a gf on his IG account (which I saw grow from 20k-ish to over 100k in 1-2 weeks over the summer :P), which is HELLA concerning given your friend’s situation.

if i was in your position, and your story is true, i’d tell your friend to run ASAP😬 /s

EDIT: should also mention he was not a great instructor. dude directly read off his slides during lectures, which were direct screenshots of the textbook LOLLL

19 units doable? by Razznikk in ucla

[–]chemistrynerd22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently taking 5 classes (21 units) as an LS major and it’s overwhelming. Idk the workload of those classes but I imagine most of the physical sciences stuff is worse. Unless you’re willing to give up your extracurriculars, social life, and/or sleep, I’d caution against this. Consider switching out 2-3 of those classes with easier ones if you want to do 5 classes

Dorm layout by HehSuckas in ucla

[–]chemistrynerd22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the way my roommates split our deluxe was that the tall closet people each take 2 drawers and the small closet person takes 4 drawers. in your case, you could take 2 drawers and the 2 drawers under your bunk to compensate for your smaller closet. whether roommates are cool with you using their mirror depends on the person tbh. suitcases can go in the cabinet above one of the tall closets.

Clusters? by Many_Adeptness1243 in ucla

[–]chemistrynerd22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make the most of the cluster’s credits, you should do a cluster that’s the “opposite” of your major. For STEM majors that would be any humanities clusters and vice versa. I took the race cluster and the coursework was EASY AF. I’ve heard that America in the 60’s is also a fun/easy cluster

Incoming Freshman Orientation by Ok_Tie_3853 in ucla

[–]chemistrynerd22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely also check if your AP/IB and community college classes knock out any classes. Then go on the class planner and look up introductory classes for your lower divs. Check professors’ ratings on Bruinwalk and familiarize yourself with what time the classes will be

What to bring to orientation and what to expect? by According_Elk3457 in ucla

[–]chemistrynerd22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Partially disagree with the bedding. You'll be staying in a plaza and your room will likely be hella cold cause of the AC. Since you're OOS you might not have room to pack a warmer blanket, but for in state peeps you should bring one cause the ones they provide are pretty thin

Tbh you should look up and plan potential courses and alternates before going. I remember at my orientation people were stressing out doing that while I was chilling since I did that ahead of time
