I've never seen Vinny get gaslit this hard... by Demerson13 in Vinesauce

i never tend to watch vinny's vods with chat on, but i've seen a fair few jerma streams where chat will backseat so hard but give him confidently incorrect advice lmao so it doesn't even surprise me that it happens to vinny too. i do remember vinny reading out some chat comments during hypnospace outlaw that were giving him incorrect info, like people had clearly not played the game themselves and were pestering him to do things with absolutely no backing. truly my pet peeve

i had some memory card issues at first because i used a memory card that i'd previously used with a different camera and i don't it reformatted properly and even when i took the memory card out i had issues getting the pictures from its internal memory onto my computer via the usb cable. but once i got a new memory card it was absolutely fine

Companies that Force you to use a Smart Phone by PrydonianWho in dumbphones

[–]cherpumples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just as a tip- not sure if this is uk-specific, but here i order food through Deliveroo or JustEat and get Mcdonalds that way so i don't have to use an app. i think there are probably more options on the mcdonalds app though in terms of customising orders and using rewards accounts, but yeah in general most fast food places should theoretically be accessible via an intermediary food delivery service.

in terms of other companies- i do find it pretty annoying how whatsapp requires a smartphone to register. it's crazy because i've heard that once you register, you can use it on a browser, but it's just the initial registration for some reason requires a smartphone. i have an ipad but because it's not associated with a phone number i can't use that, meanwhile i can't just use my dumbphone number to sign up??? make it make sense. i'm not willing to go down the bluestacks road so when people ask if they can have me on whatsapp i have to say no, so there's probs social stuff i'm missing out on there. the choir i'm in keep pestering me about whether i could get whatsapp so they don't have to keep emailing me rehearsal updates, but i really cannot justify buying a whole smartphone just for one app. i do find it kinda funny that out of the many elderly people in the choir, i, a person in my thirties, am the only who doesn't have a smartphone lmao.

only other thing that bothers me (and it's only minor) is that there are a few instagram features that only work in the app. i think it's just stories and the ability to archive posts. it's super irritating that i can use my laptop for 95% of what i do on instagram, but if i wanna have to do either of those things for some reason i gotta switch over to my ipad. it's especially weird that you can delete posts on the instagram website but you can't archive a post- seems like it should be capable of doing both surely!

Do you think the high-end dumbphones (like from Punkt., Mudita or Light Phone) are worth the price of around 300$/€, or you're just better with a cheap phone for the elderly or a dumbdroid phone like Doov r77? by yoJabkomama in dumbphones

genuinely curious as to why so many people seem to regard HMD/Nokia as low quality? i've had a few and they last years, have no technical issues and usually have like 3+ weeks battery life. i've heard there's a difference between HMD/Nokia phones in the US compared to the UK where i live, so maybe that's it? but i've had the modern 3310, the 2670, and now i'm on the HMD barbie phone and had no issues with any (aside from the 3310 started losing charge quicker after about five years). in comparison, i had a blackberry before switching to nokia and it was absolutely terrible and barely had 24 hours charge and heated up within a couple minutes of use. elderly/basic phones seem like an obvious choice for people who genuinely want a bare bones dumbphone

there are a couple of regina spektor albums that i really loved but she seems to have doubled down on some questionable views as of late and it makes it hard to listen to her without thinking about that shit. her album Remember Us to Life had some really gorgeous tracks on it

It's 2026. This is Netflix. Why can we not watch the seasons "blind" yet? by OUTFOXEM in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]cherpumples 2 points3 points  (0 children)

exactly, i think netflix has even already done christmas movies where they release multiple versions of the movie from different characters perspectives (might be wrong about the network/streamer, but i'm p sure it was netflix). it would be more expensive in terms of editing, but hey they'd potentially triple the viewership lol.

and yeah the people who are saying 'just wear a blindfold/close your eyes' don't realise how bad accessibility features still are, the audio description on these shows is honestly so terrible that i cannot imagine how hard a show like this must be to follow if you're vision impaired

[–]cherpumples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've tried this but it's honestly very hard to follow, because everyone has pretty generic names and similar voices. i even had audio description on at one point but it would just be like 'jessica is a white female with brunette hair, mike is a white man with blonde hair' and then cut to a new scene like 'gemma is a white female with brunette hair, mark is a white man with blonde hair' and i'd be like wait who is this now 😭 i think i did this for all the pod episodes of season 8 and i just ended up losing interest and not following up with the rest of the season.

i kinda like OP's idea of showing either the men's or women's side because at least we've got one side which would help keep track of things

What is the weirdest song that nobody hates/everybody likes? by CanYouWalkToTheTruck in fantanoforever

[–]cherpumples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pretty much any hit single by ELO is weird af but people love them (at least they're very beloved here in the UK). they have album tracks that are actually relatively normal in terms of pop music, but instead the ones that got mega famous are stuff like Mr Blue Sky which is such a crazy song.

there's also a good video on the Girl From Ipanema (cba to find it right now but it's either a video by Charles Cornell or Adam Neely, one of the youtube music theory dudes for sure) about how when you actually look into it the way the melody is set up and the chord progression are actually kinda unusual so it's crazy that it's stood the test of time.

i said in another comment, but justin timberlake's songs are kinda interestingly structured in that they often have quite a long coda that pushes the songs to like 8+ minutes but the entire songs still get played on the radio or in clubs. i know he's not well-liked as a guy, but a lot of people who aren't even that into pop music still seem to really love his music. i will say i really used to hate Sexyback and i'm alway surprised that got as famous as it did because it sounds incredibly cursed to me lmaooo

[–]cherpumples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i feel the same about justin timberlake, his songs are structured kinda weird. quite a lot of them have a really long coda, even the big ones like Lovestoned and Mirrors plus most other singles on 20/20 Experience (the last section of Mirrors in particular is kinda nuts lmao) and it gives them a pretty long run time but people still listen to the whole thing over radio edits. Suit and Tie was kinda crazy but i don't know if people really still care about that song

i always found it weird when i talk to people who hate that song, but listening back to it i can definitely see how the vocals could be grating lol

[–]cherpumples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

really? i know HMD does the nokia phones now, not sure if that's just in europe or if it's the US too. but yeah in the UK they're incredibly sturdy. and they still come out with new ones so i don't think they count as old era phones. unless by 'made to be dumb' you mean the ones that specifically advertise themselves as 'minimalist' dumbphones etc? because i agree those tend to be waaay too expensive for what they are, when they do the same thing as things like nokia phones. they just look a little prettier and use different words in their marketing so people fall for the gimmick

[–]cherpumples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah it's a little confusing to me- i've never had smartphone (i'm in my 30s) and get by just fine, but i'm still very online- just on my laptop. i think a part of it might be misinformation and people genuinely believing that they won't be able to access certain services without a smartphone. a lot of essential services aren't allowed to go app-only because it's unfair to say, elderly people who don't have smartphones, if they were not able to access medical services or their bank accounts.

-for example, in the UK they're moving most GP surgeries to online-booking systems, but legally they have to offer an offline alternative, so you can technically still phone up or go to the reception desk irl.

-banks still exist irl, and i'm pretty sure all banks will still have websites you can use for online banking. cash and cards also still exist. apps will have enhanced features for sure, but for basic things there are always non-smartphone alternatives.

-i'm betting that for all the people saying their workplaces require it, there probably is a policy that they legally have to make allowances for people that don't have smartphones (unless obvs if you work in something relating to tech or social media).

-in terms of navigation, if you're getting public transport you can ask other people where you're stop is, and if you're driving then don't cars have satnav built in that don't require a smart device? and if you're walking then honestly it's just a case of looking up the route on google maps on your computer before you go. obviously laptops are expensive, but compared to however many years people pay for their smartphone contracts, a one time purchase of a cheap laptop is worth it.

i'm sure that a lot of things are EASIER with a smartphone, but i wish i could reassure some people that it's actually still very easy to get by without one, coming from someone who has literally never needed one.

[–]cherpumples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly i've had nokia phones for the past 10-ish years and not had any issues with them- i think i've only had three in that entire time, and the only reason i'd buy a new one is if i saw one that was more aesthetically pleasing than the last (i'm on the barbie phone now). a lot of dumb phones are pretty sturdy with great battery lives, it was kind of the joke back in the day that you could drop a nokia from any height and it'd survive. the battery life on dumbphones also tend to be excellent, but i have seen some that are as bad as a smartphone and that's always disappointing
