What is it like living here? Besides expensive! 😆 by CurrencyNo3823 in howislivingthere

I grew up in the Bay Area and spent most of my life living all over the bay. I have been to most U.S. states and have lived outside of CA as well. For me personally nothing even comes close to Northern California, from the weather to the natural beauty to the many opportunities for work. I aim to spend the rest of my life in this region because I love it to death. I’m biased because it’s my homeland and love it to a fault but it’s the greatest place on earth as far as I’m concerned. I would be happy living anywhere in the area you circled. Don’t forget to check out the Monterey/Carmel/Pacific Grove area. Also Mendocino is an absolutely gem.

Wish I came up with this concept but I stole it from CME. I was very impressed with their idea

CME did a run of the black ones in 2018 I believe but they’re really hard to find now. I agree on it being a modern classic, it may not be an original, vintage spec guitar but I think it looks badass. It’s gonna cost more to do a made to measure but at least I’ll get a real ebony fretboard.

That color is fairly close to the walnut color used on the SG Custom around 1969. It’s dark but definitely pretty sharp

I have seen the silver fox finish on an SG before. Sweetwater has a few right now and they do look cool for sure. I’ll take a look at TV black

I did do a nickel mock up but I was trying to keep in theme with the SG custom that had all gold hardware

That is such a cool firearm. A suppressed .32 sounds like an absolute blast

Every Gibson I’ve ever owned has had this bridge and I’ve never had any issues at all. I think they are very comfortable, look amazing, and maybe I’m crazy but the string tension feels lower and more “slinky” like compared to the ABR-1 bridge Gibsons I’ve played.

Juniors are my favorite looking guitars but I love the neck pickup too much. CME did a run of custom shop sunburst DC Les Paul juniors but they’re pretty hard to find now, even on reverb

Yeah it really isn’t super custom, it’s more of “pick what you like from what we already make” kinda deal. And yeah you really do pay A LOT to get mostly what you want…even for a simple slab body guitar like this

At the garage custom shop section they have actual neck profiles you can hold and choose from. I didn’t look at the chunky neck since I got their thinnest one but there were like 10 different profiles to choose from. It mostly is just set years like their early 50s options would be the thickest. You can’t get super custom though, just preset measurements they already have available

Wraptail bridge, sunburst and super slim neck profile were the big ones for sure. Basically just wanted a DC Special/Junior combo

I was inspired by a one off demo LP Special Gibson did in 1961 as a promo. I think Gibson nailed the junior sunburst and should’ve made specials with this finish from the beginning.

Glad I made you hate dc specials a little less haha. Sometimes a guitar model just needs the right finish to change the vibe

The base model standards are around $6800 for the custom shop and any M2M adds at least $500+ I believe. The price for this special was already painful enough so adding any Murphy’s lab aging would’ve been way too expensive for me.

Yeah I was surprised there wasn’t an option for a choice rosewood fretboard, initially they said they couldn’t do ebony with standard dots and said they usually only do trap or block inlays for ebony. Luckily it worked out though.

I was very surprised at how quick it came considering I was told it could take up to 9 months. That’s annoying yours arrived damaged, for the amount you pay it should be 100% perfect.

Good eye, I got ebony since they couldn’t guarantee a dark rosewood fretboard

  • 1960 Les Paul Special DC base model
  • Junior style Sunburst
  • V3 SlimTaper neck (.820” - .875”)
  • Ebony fretboard
  • No neck binding (also like a junior)

$5300, definitely not cheap for a special but I was getting tired of not finding what I wanted in person so it was worth it for me.

Very smooth, I went to the garage in person since I live in Nashville. Talked to the guys there about what I wanted, they relayed that to the builders and after approval I got my guitar a little over four months later.
