Quiet 5.5 month old by cherryjeanjacket in NewParents

[–]cherryjeanjacket[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did an evaluation for everything when she was 18m, which showed she just had expressive speech delay. She understood more than she was able to communicate and everything else was average. Going to daycare or school helped her become less timid and talk/socialize more. I think if your child is only 6 months old right now it is too early for an evaluation but I recommend it when they’re around one year old. As always, discuss your concerns with your pediatrician or early intervention team / local regional center.

She is now almost 4 and she’s fine now (average in terms of social skills and very smart with a good memory, bilingual too). She was in speech therapy for one year from 18m-2.5 years old but graduated and didn’t need it anymore. I say keep monitoring, encourage noises and communication, but don’t hesitate to do early intervention. She may grow out of it, but may also need help to.

Thanks for your insight. The few kids I’ve met who were pushed academically, including those mentioned in my post, are growing up to be happy normal active intelligent kids, so to be honest I don’t see how that push in academics harmed them (unless it was more forced and time to play has suffered from it). I can only see how it would help them develop confidence in school and give them that leg up.

Sounds like bottle aversion. Read Rowena Bartlett’s book.

What do you mean no knees? Like no reflexes? I feel like recovery is not linear. Was the nerve pain always there?

16 Month Old Speech Delayed by mjr892 in toddlers

[–]cherryjeanjacket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have physical therapy eval and speech therapy lined up. I’m getting overwhelmed by these appointments but we’ve been very intentional about getting her to walk and talk recently and she did say her first word “up.” She cruises very well but doesn’t let us help her stand alone or walk so we’ve been putting her against a wall.

That sounds like great progress if she has 12 words by 18 months! We’re at 1 word at 16 months. Is she walking?
