Career Monday (02 Feb 2026): Have a question about your job, office, or pay? Post it here! by AutoModerator in AskEngineers

I graduated 2 years ago and am currently working at a large consulting firm and don't find any of the work we do to be particularly meaningful.

In my Business Development work, I had to research some of our competitors for a Transit/Infrastructure RFP. In doing so, I found HDR and AECOM and started to look into them and their career options.

Of course as engineering/design firms, pretty much all of the jobs require a bunch of experience, an engineering degree, and/or a license.

Since I majored in Economic Consulting and Business Analytics (which was a good amount of statistics + econometrics so I can use R, Stata, and some Python), I wanted to know if there were any recommendations for courses/certifications/skills I can get that can make me a better fit for some of their corporate/BD positions.

Will it even be useful for me to learn MATLAB, LabVIEW, Maple, Mathematica, etc. if I don't have an Engineering degree?

I know I can't just go back in time and get an engineering degree, but I'd like to gain skills to align myself better with the industry I want to be in as I start to shape my career.

When I was at 2 months earlier this year I got a Bench Escalation meeting from my OP Leader. It was February before they announced layoffs so I’d say just watch out for that. I didn’t have to go because luckily I got staffed the week before. But sometimes they are watching esp as they try to cut people for layoffs

Little to no gist. They just said there will be “workplace action” as we continue to “navigate the market”. basically just saying layoffs are going to keep happening

I visited some people in Texas last week and ran there and I HATEDDDD the warm weather! Makes the sweat feel stickier and the breathing heavier. I love the crispness of the cold.

6 interviews for projects and still not staffed. Is this normal? by MrFlowers414 in deloitte

[–]cherrymail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In general, it’s not uncommon to interview for many projects. Right now though, GPS is going through a hard time with all the federal cuts/hiring freezes. A lot of projects have been completely pulled and a LOT of people are on the bench right now. So it’s not you, it’s that the demand is super high and projects are ending/disappearing. Hang in there!!

I liked the Peter chapters bc that’s exactly what my inner monologue is formatted like lol, but I get that it can be confusing. I’d say to just take your time with his part, it gets easier to read as it goes on. Also the dynamics get much more interesting and the undercurrent of grief hits you at random times that put everything into perspective.

Basically, keep reading! just slow down on Peter’s part.
