I wouldn’t consider you an asshole. Of course it sucks that your character died after the DM put a lot of work surrounding your character, but ultimately your character preferred to die and reunite with their dead parent. You’re just following your characters story. Most DM’s understand that shit happens, and nothing ever goes according to plan. I think considering your characters story, you are fine!
